Any idea what was the OEM brand or manufacturer of the varnish/gloss on the wood dash trim? If it isn’t available now, what do you recommend as a suitable replacement? Available in the USA preferably. Thanks!

Hello, I had my dash reveneered by GDK https://www.gdkveneering.co.uk. Ged the owner is a nice guy he used to work for Bentley and now reveneers classics. There is an email address on the website, i am sure he can make soime recommendations for you.

The original coating is impervious to any known paint/varnish stripper. The only way I found to remove it is by gentle use of a hot air gun to soften it so that it can be lifted with a blade. Be careful not to damage the veneer.Dave

Thanks. I should have been more specific- I bought a new set from a craftsman who sadly passed away in the middle of the project. So they are exact American walnut reproductions, but are mid-process so they have been stained and have a base coat, but are missing the final gloss coats. I was trying to figure out if I could do myself if I knew the right kind of varnish…

I used 17 coats of rustins plastic coating…2 part.Originally posted by Forty8taylor View PostLooking back through forums I see several mentions of Rustins two-part plastic coating so I may try that if I can get some in the states.
It was easy to apply & sand.
It has not been that durable with sunlight though, with micro cracks appearing after a few years.
I’d consider using automotive 2k laquer next time.
Btw, I found nitromores traditional paint stripper did remove the original finish, when used with added heat. A bit messy & time consuming though.
