Stag Stops With Empty Fuel Filter

Can anyone advise the possible cause and solution the the following. I have fitted new reconditioned engine and completed 2000 mile with no issues. 10 days ago the car was running good but as I went to park the engine sound changed and eventually stopped I immediately thought the SU pump the issue & fitted new electronic pump. The issue continued, symptoms as follows;-
    > On my first journey the car sets of great starting first time And for first 1 to 2 miles running good then the engine sound starts to change and gradually stops it will eventually
    > Start again ok but the same thing repeats. After a few attempts with the same results when the car stopped we immediately
    > removed the engine side connection from the empty filter this was obviously under pressure as the fuel in the pipe sprayed out.
    > Following further attempts, checks revealed that in each case no fuel was in the filter when the car stopped.

Possibly a problem with the electrical feed to the pump. Take a look at the inertia cut out first - renowned for intermittent contact, and can be cleaned up relatively easily.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

Robert. When you turn the ignition on does the pump start ticking then go quiet?
When the problem starts is there any noise from the pump?

        Robert.
The fuel filter can often looks empty but fuel will still be passing through it. Petrol vapour collects in there, but that doesn't stop the fuel reaching the carburettors. If you mount it vertically with the outlet on top, it will fill with the engine running if the pump is working, and your comment about it being pressurised seems to show that it is.
I would start to investigate the ignition system. Maybe the coil is failing as it heats up?

if none of the above, drive around with the fuel cap off. could be vacuum from the fuel tank not venting correctly

Thank all for replies, the problems still persists and I now think may not be a fuel problem & following Lingen reply I am going to check the ingnition system and have orded new coil to eleiminate this as the problem.

Those were the exact same symptoms I had with a failing HT coil. It took me three new coils before I got one that worked - go Bosch! And make sure it is held up above the block top surface.

Check you voltage at the pump you should have at min 10.5 volts if you have low voltage the pump will not perform like it should but it will run just not pump up enough fuel. Possibility bad or loose crimp on the terminals bad ground low supply coming through the cut off switch all easy checks.
