Do rust holes in silencers make the engine run poorly?

The right silencer on my Stag has holes through it. I've been putting off changing them for years mainly because the car doesn't sound very loud plus this is one of worst jobs on a Stag I don't want to tackle. This Stag is my auto one so its not fast in any way. I was following the thread regarding the X pipes for V8 engines with regard to balance. I'm assuming with all these holes, it definitely isn't balanced. I'm sorting out some carb and running issues and am wondering if the holes are not helping.

The front box on an exhaust system is regarded as an expansion box, the second as the silencer.
the stag only has the one box in the system.
So the hole won't really make that much difference to it in terms of running.
But it should be patched/repaired as exhaust gas can make its way into the car if standing in traffic

      Hello Phil,
Thanks for the clarification. Yes it does smell I've been able to patch it with baked bean cans, but now the ends have holes.
