    Twisted overdrive - A Type

Ok I'm so confused, someone please say they've come across this before!!

My engine is straight. My gearbox is straight. My overdrive (a-type) looks straight, up until the mounting studs, which are sooooo not straight! As in, one is way higher than the other. And no, the studs aren't bent, the holes are different heights. Like the whole rear part of the overdrive has been rotated...

I'm really hoping someone is going to say, oh yeah, common problem, the answer is this...
e.g. It's a different A Type overdrive from a different car, or the rear of the overdrive has been put on wrong etc.

Because I cannot for the life of me see how this is at such a different angle of rotation to the rest of the gearbox!!

Photo's don't really do it justice.. but I can try...

On a standard Stag the gearbox is not straight, it leans to the right, (towards the driver in the U.K.) it happens at the engine rear plate. As you have a Ford engine I wonder if that is still the case? Not sure exactly how the A Type rear mount accounts for this tilt but if your gearbox is now straight then it’s possible the rear mount would be tilted to the left.

J type, but the A type and indeed non OD should be the same you can see the tilt

See, that is why I love this forum. That’s really what I needed to know… so the overdrive and gearbox are all sound, what I’m looking at is the connecting plate between the engine and gearbox.
      Thank you!

      The investigation continues…

UPDATE: I called 'Specialist Engines' who still do the Stag - Ford conversions, and he said they had to sometimes drill/ elongate the holes in the gearbox rear mount plate to get it to sit straight on the bushes. So yes Mr Trunt, you are correct, and the mating plate between the Ford engine and the Stag gearbox is probably the culprit, someone obviously thought the gearbox needs to sit straight!

So what I'm going to do is take off the gearbox mounting plate (that attaches to the overdrive via the two studs) and alter it slightly (drill/ weld etc), so it will sit straight and level despite the position of the studs.
Hopefully this will enable me to mount it on the bushes correctly without messing about with the rotation of the whole engine/ gearbox!

        I'll keep you posted...

If you are interested in the progress of this, please see my latest blog post:

Having had a bit of time to reflect on the previous attempt to sort out my mangled gearbox mount, straighten my propshaft and reduce vibration, I decided that I would give it another go. I found my…
