    Stromberg reaming tool

    Hello,
I have purchased a rebuild kit for my carbs. It has spindles and discs in it. I have been told that they used to supply a reaming tool for the spindles, do I need one and does anyone know where I can get one?
Thankyou for any help you can give.

      throttle spindles?

shouldn't need any reaming. replace the seals each end on the outside of the carb body and you should be all good.

Where did the kit come from?

Normally you would only need a reamer if you intend to fit oversized spindles. That’s pretty rare on a Stromberg..

It is a long time ago I last had to rebuild a Stromberg, but I seem to remember some little aluminium sleeves in the rebuild kit. I assumed they were for in case the body where the spindle passes through were worn, then it would need reaming (accurately) for them to be fitted. I didn't have to, as all the wear was on the spindle, so just replacing those did the trick. I think it would be a job for a machine shop if it needed doing as the slightest bit out and the spindle would stick.

            Hello!
            Thankyou all for your help. In response to the emails, I have;
            1. I have contacted Classic Carbs and am awaiting their response.
            2. The kit came from Southern Carbs as recommended by Tony Hart. They can do the work bit unfortunately they have a long waiting list due to covid.
            3. I have been told by Turner Carbs that usually they do not need to ream the carbs. They change the spindles but 99% of the time, it is the seals that have gone as they are 40-50 years old.
            4. Alot of the carb specialists have the facilities to machine the carbs for bushes or larger spindles, however on the syromberg it does not appear to be a common requirement.

Any other advice would be welcome.
            regards,
            Lagnakeil

Lagnakeil I rebuilt two sets of ZS carbs. ( I just replaced most seals ) I even adjusted the temp. compensators. With one set, all was well. However with the other set on my auto I was having idle issues. In the end I blocked off the compensators.

I reckon the reason why Strombergs don't wear badly on Stags is because their built-in return springs are concentric with the spindles and merely rotate them, and the strong spring on the linkage arm just assists
them in overcoming the friction of the cable and ball joints.
Other installations commonly have straight springs pulling direct on arms attached to the spindles, causing them, and the carb body, to wear in the direction of the "Pull".

If you are talking about the bushings that the spindles go through they come out with a drill bit or a square easy out the drill will bite in and it will come out. The reamer is a long special one which would not be worth buying for a once used time. Once you change the bushings fit the spindles you will know if they are lined up. I think I used an expandable reamer just to ease one of them. Have a look at Joe Curto he has a good website also on youtube show the bit you are on about.
