Mine has an oil cooler. Most people will tell you it’s not necessary but my car tows a big trailer sometimes and gets thrashed on competitive events a bit more often. An oil cooler helps.
I used a normal 13-row cooler fitted in front of the main radiator, it doesn’t make any difference to the engine cooling. There’s an oil thermostat in the line and a sandwich plate between the oil filter and the engine block. The only awkward bit was cutting two holes in the engine bay front panel underneath the chassis leg to run the pipes through.
Had one on mine when I bought the car 4 years ago. When it went to faversham's for a suspension Bush job they advised to remove it and I agreed as no oil stat and only road use. Oil pressure has remained the same.
why do you want an oil cooler? Is it just a shiny things requirement?
It adds cooling capacity to the system, which is often said to be marginal on the Stag. Oil coolers are more effective at removing heat (for their size) than the water radiator. I have always run one but I don't think they are strictly necessary, just a belt and braces job.
I did but removed it. On Stags there holes for brackets for the AC condenser. (Those holes are on the bits where there front bumper attaches to but further back.) Get two flat plates with holes in and anchor it on there. I had more issue with routing the lines to it.
thanks for the feedback. The reason I was asking is that I have an oil cooler and the mounting brackets. But the auto box cooler is where the oil cooler seams to fit.
I have engine out at the moment so if I do fit one it’s best I sort out holes etc.
so do I relocate the auto box cooler to the front as it’s a heat sink with cooling fins than a cooler. And put the oil cooler where the auto one is.
as for why bother, why not! It’s a project and although it seems not to improve cooling it can’t be a bad thing.
I have got oil coolers on two of my cars but they were both set up to do track days. Don’t think I need it for road use, but if you have ever seen what happens to your oil pressure after a few laps of a race circuit you wouldn’t go anywhere near a track without one (or a baffled sump, but I think I need that for road use as the oil pressure disappears under heavy braking without it)

Personally, I wouldn't put it where the auto box one goes (because though I don't have an auto, i seem to remember that the auto box cooler is behind the two air intakes in the front valance but ahead of the rad? which will impede cooling air to the rad, due to the turbulence behind it) mount it in front of the radiator with as small a gap as possible between it and the rad, doing it that way you don't get turbulence behind the oil cooler which means the bit of the rad it covers still gets (relatively) cool air going through it. Mine is mounted on brackets to stand it off from the side of the battery box and is only about 2 cm from the rad.

Okay so I have decided currently not to put the oil cooler in, however I have put some pipework holes through the front bulkhead with the anticipation if I do fit it it will be in the front where the air cooler for the air-conditioning would be. In the meantime I’m fitting a fan in front of the radiator.
having the engine out makes getting the holes in easier.
