    auto

    Hi All
I know this is a stupid question but I’ve never had an auto before, I drove the car home using D P R N but what’s the point of 1 and 2

So that you can choose either of the lower gears. This may be to hold them longer when accelerating, or to provide engine braking when descending a hill. I believe the handbook explains.

So you can change between them like a manual while moving

Useful when towing to stop the auto from changing up to early. 1 keeps you in 1st, 2 keeps it to 1st and 2nd.

"2" also makes the 'box use more revs in first.

Hardly ever use them myself, after all, what's the point of an auto if you don't let it be one? Similar thing with "flappy paddles" in moderns.

I use the shift to select the gear I want when I’m driving quickly or against the clock in competition. I also shift to 3 in traffic (mine’s a 4-speed auto) because top is an overdrive gear, and I’ll often shift to 2nd when approaching traffic lights or a junction to help slow the car and to help accelerate when moving on from the junction. Not taught these days, but it used to be the proper way.

I can confirm, engine braking on a steep hill or faster acceleration to burn off (old) hot hatches! Regards, John.

1, 2 were originally lock in gears for use in winter conditions

Thanks for the replies, I know you can’t push start an automatic but can you tow one if in neutral?

This, and your original question, are both explained in the Owners Handbook. If you do not have a copy, it might be worth seeking one out as there is a wealth of info in there.
