    Cooling System leak

    Hi

I bought a Stag Mk1 in the summer which is running extremely well. I drove it home some 150 miles through the Dartford tunnel in the afternoon - hot weather, lots of creeping forward and stopping. I was very worried about it overheating but it seemed fine. I say this to indicate that the cooling system does seem to be efficient enough for UK use. However over the months since, I noticed that when I topped up the rad (old type with pressure cap on top) after a run, the coolant level is always at the bottom of the filler pipe. I thought there must be a leak somewhere. This weekend I filled up again to just under the cap and ran it till it was up to temp. I could see coolant being pushed into the expansion bottle, but there was a small puddle of liquid in the Vee of the engine in front of the distributor, when I mopped it up it reappeared after a couple of minutes. I reasoned possibly a leak from a heater hose, or a core plug or a dodgy intake manifold gasket. I think I'll need to dismantle and find it for sure but would prefer to do this in the winter. What do other experts think about trying a radweld solution for the summer? would I be drummed out of the club for such a disgraceful thought? More seriously, would it impede the cooling sufficiently to be a threat to the engine? Again, I reason, if it is leaking then the pressure should be down which itself should impede the cooling. it does seem to be dragging the overflow coolant back as the expansion bottle stays the same level.

I would be grateful to hear the experience of others who have used something like radweld, if you are brave enough to admit it.

Hi, and welcome to the forum

try a bottle of K Seal in the system, worked wonders for my car, and may others have used it with good results

Hi, Welcome, as Ian said "the wonder product K Seal" could be the answer. it's your call really, you know had bad the leak is and if it should be investigated further or if it's only slight use some K seal. I asked a similar question this week for the same reason as I had an annoying small damp patch keep appearing but not worth doing the manifold gaskets.

Regarding the water level it's never going to stay filled to the top because as the water gets hot it expands and pushes some out to the bottle, when it cools down the pressure cap is designed to allow air to be drawn in or you could end up with hoses collapsing.

      hope this is helpful,

      Ian.

        Hi Ian,

Thanks for the info about K Seal. That's one I have not heard of. However I do believe you are not correct about the coolant level. The radiator is connected to the expansion bottle and the pressure cap on the radiator has two valves, one to allow the expanding water to pass and overflow to the expansion bottle. When the car cools the coolant contracts and (instead of the hoses collapsing) the second valve opens in the pressure cap and allows the overflow coolant to be sucked back into the radiator. Because of this the level should stay full - just below the cap.

        Thanks again.

        Paul

Your welcome, all I'll add is what the theory is and what happens in practice are often different my Mk11 always takes about half a cup in the filler neck if I check it, even if I jack up the car to make that the highest point in the system when filling.

Best of luck with sorting the problem.

          Ian.

            I think Ian is right.

            Theory and practice are different.

            Try K seal.

            Jeff.

Thanks again, I've just ordered some K Seal and will let you know what happens. I did have the same system on my TR4A some years ago and the level did stay as it should. Again I'll let you know.

              Thanks for your help.

Let's just hope its not the water pump leaking.... you would get the puddle in the same place and K Seal, excellent as it is won't stop that ....
