Exhaust question

Hi everyone, started to take off exhaust today tail pipes came off no problem but the next section had been spot welded to the third section, and the brackets had also been spot welded. Taking them off to get diff out so I can reinforce nose cone. Is this normal. Regards Steve

No, welding of the exhaust is not normal. I’m afraid that the junction adjacent to the rear subframe is often difficult to remove but welding isn’t usual.

Many thanks for reply, unfortunately trying to grind spot welds off I managed to grind a hole in the exhaust. I suppose these things are sent to try us.

Guessing that your system is mild steel, it may be possible to repair the damage when the exhaust section is on the bench

Hi, no it’s stainless steel, I have bought some metal putty ,so I am going to fill hole and put a jubilee clip around it, hopefully that will do the trick, Cheers Steve.

those pipes which go through the frame are not so expensive. I'm always looking for a cheap solution and I might have cut them off and bought new instead of getting a grinder out. I parted out a Stag and took the exhaust pipe off the PO had no clue how to feed those pipes through the frame holes. Additional bends were made.For the live of me I couldn't get them to fit. in the end I bought a new exhaust. Using the new exhaust as a pattern I was just able to bend the pipes into the correct shape. They are on the car now, however I had to use a baked bean can and two hose clips to join one end as it was slightly short.

Ah yes, baked bean cans were very popular back in the day .. good for patching holes in the average British Leyland mild steel exhaust to make it last another couple of weeks
