UPDATE:

The Gearbox problem I have/had. Terry ( mechanic extraordinaire ) one of Tony Whites friend has always helped me with Stag related problems. He believed that my problem was not clutch or gearbox related from the outset.
The latest advice he gave me was to disconnect the overdrive wiring or take the fuse out and test the car out.
I did this and took it on the A40, kept within the speed limit , the Stag just flew up and down the A40 in 2,3,and fourth gears.

Then came home and tested it, taking off in 1st gear, several times.........the problem dissappeared.
Will take it out regularly and monitor further. If thats the problem then I can live without the Overdrive until the time comes to fix it.
Terry is under the impression that the wiring for overdrive shorts out somewhere and the overdrive engages and takes off in first gear.

Well thats about it, dont really know any further......

OK … BUT

if it’s wired conventionally then it cannot go into overdrive when in first or second gear because the inhibit switch will prevent any power making it to the solenoid.. the likelihood of it picking up 12v to energise the solenoid in the 2ft between the inhibit switch and the solenoid is very low…

Of course if it’s not wired properly then….

Grrrr , With engine related problems you can always get help and advice on how to solve the problem, be it Youtube, Google, ROM, Club members etc.
With gearbox its limited as what you can cannot do, unless you are an allrounder.

you mite be better off getting a new/second hand gearbox overdrive loom, just in case any one has butchered your loom there be plug and play

chances are yours is okay but another loom shouldnt be dear
