    Power Steering Pump Rebuild

My pump seemed ok when cold but would whine when it warmed up, so I thought I'd rebuild the pump and be back on the road.
One piece of advise taking it apart would be the use of 3/8" all thread and a slide hammer to get the pump and housing separated.

After pressing out the bush and pressing in the new bush, everything went back together fairly easy and it seemed pretty straightforward. The only thing I would say you need to watch out for is to make sure you put the pressure relief valve in correctly (first the spring> then the valve, nut end first> then the threaded pressure regulator).

To bleed the system, I lifted the front wheels off the ground and without starting the car, turn the wheel lock-to-lock watching the reservoir to see if bubbles are coming up.

I say all went well, but I cannot get the system bled; and therefore the pump to pressure up. I've tried to bleed the system over and over and over till I've worn out my welcome with the wife. The thing is, no matter how many times I try to bleed the system, I continue to get bubbles.

There's no leaks, but with the air continuing to come up there has to be leaks somewhere. Anyone have any suggestions?

bleed with car running and wheels on the ground. move steering wheel full lock to lock a few times.

You need to have the engine running to pump the air out.

As the others have said, engine running, wheels on the ground, turn lock to lock a few times to bleed. If the wheels are in the air there will be little or no load on the steering so the valve that controls the power steering may not open and let the fluid circulate.

If after that you still have issues then you possibly have a small air leak where air is getting in through one of the connections, the leak can be tiny so will let air in but not fluid out so there will be no visual evidence of it.

Thanks for the help everyone. Interesting that Saginaw says to bleed the pump with the car off and wheels up and the ROM say car on and down. Either way did produce bubbles for me, problem is the bubbles are still coming, so I have to have a leak of some kind.

I used this kit https://www.summitracing.com/parts/edd-7910 and it had two sets of O-Rings for sealing the body; one was thin and one was thick. I measured them with a mic when installing and went with the "thin set". Anyone have experience with that? There is no leaking of fluid anywhere, but the bubbles are very obvious.

My next step is going to be tearing it all back apart and trying the "thick" set of O-Rings.

I bought a Gates kit here in USA. it comes with a few rings for different year pumps. I matched what I had taken out. if your steering begins to work, I wouldn't worry about the bubbles. the system may be self bleeding.over time.

Eidelman 7910 was the one I used, no issues here.. Dont remember a problem selecting seals though.. but its been a few years.

Not sure if this will help, but I rebuilt my pump about a year ago and had a similar problem. No assistance, continuous bubbles and no need to top up.
Ended up stripping it down again and found that I had inexplicably (!) put the eccentric plate in the wrong way round (which believe me, is easy to do). Means the ports dont line up.
Its supposed to have an arrow or dot marking, but mine didn't.
Reassembled, did a bench test, and all ok. The book actually advises to prime by hand anyway.
With a new greased O-ring the case comes off easily the second time!

Easy to do.... Luckily before I installled it I read Drews "Bavarian Stag" thread and saw that arrow.. but didnt remember seeing it when I reassembled mine.. disassembled it and yes I had it the wrong way round.. Its in The ROM, I have no excuse!

Well it's definitely coming back off and apart, so we're going to see how good my eyesight is....or isn't

                        Thanks for the assistance.

Yep, I ended up finding that I had fit the rotor the wrong way round and had the arrow towards the front of the pump. Thanks BRG and everyone

All back together and working properly...so far.

This all started with a I'll rebuild the pump while I have it off to fit a new battery, a remote battery disconnect and then build some new 7mm pertronix spark plug wires. LOL
