    Choke cables

    Choke cables…They are nla.
Trying to make new ones….not that straightforward though…. been trying to remake the rod & housing (billet) for a while now.
Able to repair broken & tatty ones in the meantime.
please don’t throw any rods or housings away!

Are TR6 or GT6 choke cables similar in build? You've probably looked in this route.

That sounds like a good idea! That twin cable, its positioning and routing are, shall we say, less than optimum. When I renewed my cables I got some from a company who basically just do cables and selected some high quality stainless ones which ar so well woven that, to the touch, they feel as though they're Teflon coated. What a job getting them attached though - ended up jamming grub screws in the rod and plenty of superglue.

Pushbike cables have a range of standard "bullets" on one end - maybe some way could be found to utilise that feature to attach them?

I used pushbike brake cables, silver soldered into the old rod. Push the cables through a potato before soldering so that the heat and solder doesn’t spoil them. Note silver solder, ordinary plumbers solder won’t be strong enough. The other mod was to move the choke knob across to the HRW switch position, the choke cable run is straighter and feels more reliable.

Push bike gear cables are a smaller diameter than brake cables. You could rig it up with a single cable and a throttle cable splitter from an old motorcycle this converts 1 cable into 2. 20220308_120352.jpg 20220308_120405.jpg

Exactly how I did it (except the potato bit)

There was a tr6 twin cable with similar housing & rod. They are also probably drying up but currently still available if you can afford them. £180 iirc

That’s a possibility. Not pursuing it myself.
Maybe tricky to get the choke switch hooked up to it.

At the moment I’m only looking to replicate the original…. Or close to.
                    They do work for most.
Inner cables are originally skinny have been using 1.5mm to repair, some stainless, but they are more tricky to sweat into the rod.
If owners can’t operate the standard cable, please (no offence) take a bus. (No offence)
some replacement cables had sub standard crimping, that’s how I got involved…. (My choke cable is fine though) just helping out at the moment

I reckon ckoke cables are almost in the category of a "commodity" item for which there will be an ongoing demand, hence they'd be a good candidate for SOCTFL investment. I guess there will be challenges because technologies such as 3D printing might not be suitable for the rod and housing at an affordable cost? As with other projects we have talked about it might be worth exploring options in discussion with other clubs in the Triumph Forum because they may have similar problems with their similar parts?

The housing is ideal as a die cast part …. No one quotes though unless is in the 1000’s per annum.
A billet part has to be broached.
the rod has to be concave milled to produce its section
Broaching assembly & tool is taking time to complete but is well underway now.
Concave cutters have been procured but will probably only cut a solid brass rod….they are ex BSA & hss.
A carbide concave cutter would be £££…. Probably 500 or more.
Afaiaa there are not that many tr6 cars that need a twin cable.
3d printing in metal isn’t likely to be currently viable in this project due to current cost & surface finish limitations. Development is ongoing though. My work has in house metal 3D printing… never thought I’d see that.

If originality is not an issue then surely there must be other chokes available from such a vast variety of old cars, there must be a compromise to be made.

I have a couple of chokes from some old unknown classics with twin cables which are shorter. They could be made to fit.
The matter of importance is that you want a working car at the end of the day.

’Surely?’ Not so sure anything is readily available. Glad to be corrected though.
