    Lower Steering arm - can they be overhauled?

    Hi all, i've just blasted the lower steering arm (the one with the two Spicer couplings in it) but am I right in thinking these units CAN'T be refurbished? I'd like to use as much of the car's original equipment on re-assembly and don't really like the look of the available replacements that i've seen so far. As ever any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

    I don’t believe you can easily source the bearings you need to rebuild them..

        I got some new bearings, but failed to remove the originals.
        The new bearings were taken from a Land Rover joint.
        Even if you can remove the old bearings, I don’t think the cruciform will come out, which means the ground surface of the cruciform, which may be worn, will have to be reused.

          My bearings guru had one of mine and declared it was beyond him to replace the bearings. He’s not a man to give up easily.

            I welded a bolt onto a bearing cup to try and slide hammer the cup out.
            The weld worked… the slide hammer worked, it pulled the top off the top of the bearing cup (tore) , leaving the rest behind….. even if it had worked, there’s 8 to get out!

              i seem to recall that the bearing caps are pinned into the yokes and not serviceable.

              i fully buy into the "been there 45 years" mentality but there are limits in my most humble opinion. in this case if there is play in the bearing, replace it

                The shaft joints aren’t/ isn’t seemingly serviceable….having tried…. Even if the peening is removed . The cruciform isn’t removable, even with bearings removed it would seem.
                I tried & failed.
                Has anyone succeeded to rebuild an original?

                    I am sure Tony White will have plenty of good original ones in stock. I have never known one to wear out.

                      Having said the above I bought a new one from Robsport some years ago and it is still perfect - I’ve never had a bad part from them..
