    Fitting an XJ6 water pump

I acquired a Stag for rebuild recently (not my first) and decided to change the water pump to an external one, without doing much research.... just based on what I wanted it to do and not do. I didnt want electric, its not in keeping with the car and I wanted to retain as much as possible. Ebay provided a couple of pumps and the XJ6 one looked OK. It is now in place where the aircon would have gone. Yet to fire it up....

Takes a bit of fiddling and plumbing. I also fitted a Defender header tank - more in keeping than the alloy/stainless ones. I can give more details of the plumbing if anyone is intewrested or would like to comment.

Very good! What did you do about the original pump, bunged? Will you be doing a full installation step by step guide with parts required list?

I used a bung from Ward to block off the stag pump. I used the existing thermostat. I re-thought the circulation slightly to tee the header tank into the pump bypass inlet and vent the top hose into the tank. I retained the expansion tank, with its connection to the right radiator tank. The two tank system is widely used and makes a lot of sense. Other than that I used 15 and 28mm copper (much of which ended up as scrap as the plumbing got modified) lots of gas and solder, swearing and cursing. A 14" electric fan is positioned infront of the radiator, switched by a W1209 electronic thermostat sensing bottom hose temperature. There is a further thermostatically controlled alarm in the top hose plus a float switch in the header tank. Both go to a small unit in the cab giving visual and audible alarms of low oil pressure, low voltage, low water or overheat.
I have yet to test the system as the final touches of a full engine rebuild are being assembled. If it all works I will be happoy to give more details, but am really just inviting comments to point out likely problems before testing.

Very nice, Hope it works out.
Many owners have an external Waterpump low down nowadays, usually a Ford v6 pump.
often in the rh side alternator location.
Have seen a lovely diy conversion on the left side though, with super access.
Fwiw, original pump is fine with high / faithful / oem quality replacement parts…. That most ‘specialist’ suppliers don’t offer sadly…. Only one pump seal is worthy afaiaa.
All the rest seem to fit, but cause a much higher torque to turn, with pretty dire consequences soon after
If your triumph stag water pump needs a seal use a pioneer Weston one…PLEASE.

If you need a pump rebuilding with worthy parts, contact me via pm if to wish.
I’m not a business, just a member who had water pump issues & looked into it properly, (sp?) without slating the original design etc. then found out how to rebuild properly, (sp?) With good parts & assembly.
