    tickover

    Hi all
My BW35 is a but clunky when changing down into first, the tickover is 950rpm I thought if I dropped it to 750 it might help, my question is can I just drop it using the idle screw or is there something else I have to do as well
    Thanks Alan

    Alan.
Assuming the idle screws are correctly set so that each carburettor is "Open" by the same amount, all you need to do is unscrew each one by the same amount till you get it down to around 750 RPM. You may be able to get it a bit less, but if you go too far, the engine may stall when you put it in to gear.
    Mike.

With the BW35 you want the tickover as low as you can to reduce the "thump" when you engage drive or reverse. Mine idles happily at around 550rpm and hardly changes when you engage drive. 950 rpm is way too high, even 750 rpm is on the high side.

If you can't get a smooth idle at lowish rpm then you really need to get it all set up from scratch - so ignition timing, carb balance and mixture.

There's an expert on FB. He says if you get a clunk on down shifting loosen off the kick down cable. worked for me and a friend

Thanks Goldstar. The correct advice has already been given, engine idling as low as you can comfortably get it for the least clunky engagement, & de-adjust the kickdown cable (i.e. move the outer cable towards the clevis on the inner cable) until the clunk pulling up (its 2nd not 1st that clunks as you slow to a halt) stops happening. These BW units should shift into top gear on a light, steady pull away at about 23 - 25 mph. If the throttle linkage is setup correctly & working as it should with a correct setup cable the trans should kick down from 3rd gear straight to first when you plant your foot hard down below 25mph, it should skip second all together. The car takes off quite well if everything is working OK!
