4 speed auto from a Volvo in a Stag

I was searching BW35 gearboxes and came across a US based car MG forum where someone says they knew someone putting a Volvo 4 speed auto gearbox in a Stag. I've only heard of the ZF conversion. Would something out of a Volvo work? They say the following: It did take a 240 series mechanical speedo on like a 740 transmission

Could possibly be the BW35 3 speed with the overdrive add on.
This combo was fitted to a Volvo model back in the day, and also London Taxis.
    Very rare.
Also a very few retro fitted to Stags.
    Mike.

Volvo also used the ZF 4HP22:

Zfhp422 is nice in a stag. Not that Swedish though
probably lighter than other transmission combinations.

The common Volvo 4 speed unit was the Aisin Warner A40D transmission, like the ZF 4HP22 the early ones were cable controlled, the later ones electronic. Unfortunately the early cable controlled 4 cyl unit don't have a lockup torque converter so not worth bothering with, the 6cyl did though. As has been mentioned Volvo did fit the ZF 4HP22 but it was much less common that the A/W. Both Good transmission but the ZF is a much more simple unit

Can recommend the Tate & Lewis ZF 4HP conversion. I have no vested interest in this except to say I am delighted with the noise reduction and reduction in fuel consumption. It should have been how the automatics were delivered rather than either the BW35 or BW65 boxes. I am planning a tour of some of the Alpine passes, and I know my wife and I won't be deaf reaching Switzerland.

They probably would have been were there 4 speed lockup units available in the early 1970's, but they were not about until the late 1980's so development took a while!

If you’re after parts for the Volvo 940 auto transmission…. It’s AW 71…. (Aisin Warner) not ‘AL’

can only see them for sale from the USA at the moment

Yes that is the correct gearbox. They are avaliable in UK. They average around £200.

                      Volvo 240/740/940 AW71L Automatic Transmission

The L on the end is very important it's the lock up type you also need the selector rod off the side as to make the part is fiddley. And don't forget the talk converter it must be the one out that gearbox.
