    Starter Motor Relay?

    Hi All

whilst taking the starter motor out of my 74 Stag I unfortunately think that I disconnected 3 wires of the attached electrical component (see photos below) which I have not got a clue as to what it is! Can anyone tell me what this is (I think it’s a relay). This was fixed to the bulk head under the bonnet directly above the starter motor.

Can anyone tell me what wire goes to which terminal. The 3 terminals starting at the top going clockwise are numbers 87, 85, 30. The wire attached was attached to earth. The 3 wires which I don’t know where they go are 1 - brown wire from the solenoid battery connection, 2 - a red and white stripe wire from the ignition, 3- a white wire from the large spade connection on the solenoid next to the yellow and white wire from the coil.

Sorry all sounds complex but can anyone help. Many thanks

Imho this relay only helps to mask underlying contact wear (resistance) in the ignition switch, solenoid or inhibitor switch.

            Hi All,

I am thinking of fitting one of these solenoid relays. As to Julians point above, I think the aim is to reduce arcing in the ignition switch and so extend its life. The starter solenoid takes 10s of amps, I believe, and being mostly an inductive load will produce a lot of arcing on switch off (of the solenoid, not engine). Tony Hart recommends it, so it must be good!

What I cannot find anywhere is where you fit it? Where is the best place to break the connection? Is it on the starter itself, in which case what do you mount the relay on?

If there is an agreed consensus on how this mod is done, I would like to go with that.

            Thanks
            Mike
