    Clutch Problems

Hi all, I am after some advice to resolve a problem I've found on starting up my Stag after winter hibernation .
The car has been garaged all winter while I've rebuilt the front suspension, it started up with no problem but the clutch pedal felt a little easier to press than I remembered but when I engaged reverse with a crunch of gears the car shot backwards.
I then found I could not engage any gear with the engine running but could easily with the engine stopped. I had been aware of a very slight leak from the slave cylinder and had already purchased one so I assumed it had finally failed and fitted the new one.
After careful bleeding ( nipple uppermost) including allowing gravity to fill the system the problem still persists.
The pedal feels good but there doesn't seem to be much travel of the pushrod..
Sorry for the long rambling post but any advice would be most appreciated.

Sounds like your clutch plate may be stuck to the flywheel and/or pressure plate. Not uncommon.
Have someone sit in the car with it in gear and the clutch pressed. Rock the car forward and back, if the car doesn't move the hand brake is on or the clutch is stuck.

I had the same problem. Did you use a hand held vacuum bleeder? Or was it a 2 man job? You have to bleed it UNTIL there is clear bubbleless fluid running out.
Also finally push the rod in by hand with the nipple open.
I Rocked the car for about a dozen or so times in gear. Also as suggested by members I sprayed WD40 into crevices or any opening THEN it worked.

Hi Sukhi, thanks for your advice, i suspect and hope the problem is with air still in the fluid and will have another go bleeding it.
Can i ask where did you spray the WD40 ?

        Many thanks Jusdrew.

Anywhere that would reach the clutch assembly, I have even heard of some who have drilled small apertures to free rusty spots.

HI all, just a quick update on my clutch problem. I'm very glad to say its sorted. After re-bleeding the clutch, nipple at the top and pushing the pushrod back in to the cylinder with the pedal held down I still could not engage any gears, so as a last resort it was the back end up in the air on axle stands and wheels a couple of inch off the floor, two thousand revs (frightening) then hard on the brakes with the clutch pedal full to the floor. After four attempts it was still stuck and I was starting to get very concerned but tried one more time and this time with a bang it freed.
The car has been kept in a dry garage for about five months while I've been working on it but lesson now learned and I will make sure I don't have the same problem next year.
Thanks again for your advice and help
            Regards

What you need to do now is a bit of gentle slipping of the clutch to get the rust deposits off of the pressure plate and fly wheel.
