    Wipers behaving badly

    My wipers have never been perfect.... they used to work on setting 1 at normal speed as they should, setting 2 (fast) they sometimes worked at fast, sometimes just at normal speed. Moving the stalk to intermittent was always quite stiff, but generally worked once in position.
    Whilst out and about the other day there was some light rain, I put on intermittent then went to normal speed as it got a little heavier. I the rain then stopped so I turned off the wipers...... but they kept going!
    Now they work at normal speed wherever the stalk is placed, until you put the stalk in position 2, which stops the wipers. They do not park, just stop wherever they are on the screen.
    Interestingly (or not) selecting intermittent now feels easier on the stalk, but the wipers still run at normal speed.
    Is this a problem with the wiper stalk/connections or with the motor?
    All advice greatly received, any instructions must be at idiot level. Long complicated mechanical terms such as "grub screw" will leave me flummoxed!!

    I have the same problem. My local Stag specialist says the system needs greasing - however one does that I don't know. There is a slider switch under the motor which I think also affects the "parking" of the blades as well as the intermittent setting. No doubt the clever and more gifted among us will advise us both.

      Years back I started working on getting a mk2 Stag on the road. The motor came from a mk1 car. I removed the tubes and gearboxes the part the wiper arm connect to. they had high spots and were binding somewhat. i was able to go through my parts bin and I replaced both with newer boxes. I greased the lines and reassembled. I was surprised of the speed. The car had no windscreen but you could hear the motor whissing by under no load.

        I suspect the column switch is the biggest problem here.
        The wipers on my MK1 tend to keep going in very hot weather (mostly happens in France as the rain is too cold here)! This problem is with the parking switch in the wiper motor, but the fact yours stops when you move to position 2 suggests there is mischief happening in the column switch as well.

          Open the column switch up. Be careful as I recall the wiper switch has ball bearings and springs in it. Clean contacts with switch cleaner or fine emery cloth. Use a dielectric grease and reassemble.

            Mine stops anywhere as soon as the column switch is off, only the number one slow speed works no fast or intermittant. I have tried 2 other stalks but to no avail. I have a spare inert of the motor with the parking switch ( kindness of Tony White ) Which I am reluctant to replace..its hard wired I have not got soldering and removal of the wiring needed skills.
            Well thats my diagnoses of the problem which I may be wrong about

              Always adjust the parking switch with a wet screen as the arms will travel further.

                Thanks for the replies. I will have a go at very carefully opening the column switch and giving a good clean and grease.
                What can possibly go wrong???? 🤔

                  Park switch position or damage is most likley culprit. Column switch is 2nd. On a mk2 the delay unit also.
                  Have also heard of wiring connector resistance being an issue.
                  Am trying to remake 16w park switches (with new brush - pack wired) but it’s not that easy…only one done so far… using adapted 14w contacts with a 3D printed nylon housing.
