Depends when it was actually built. Does the V5 say it was "New at 1st registration"? If not, it may have been used abroad and then imported a couple of years later - back then, the car was registered with a plate corresponding to the date of registration, not necessarily it's age. A local member here in Hants has a Mk1 on an S-reg as it was originally registered in the Channel Islands before being brought back to the mainland in the late 70s.
If you post your chassis number, someone should be able to advise whether you should be eligible for free tax or not. I'm afraid I can't quite remember the cutoff point.

It has generally been accepted that the last Stag built within the current tax exemption rules is LD21086
Howeverwe recomendthat for cars with commission numbers between LD21087 and LD 21100, the owner should obtain a BMIHT certificate which will show the exact build date, as it will confirm whether or nor your car was built prior to 31st December 1972. If, on the other hand, your vehicle has a registration date recorded on the vehicle's Registration V5 or V5C, up to and including 7th January 1973, it will automatically qualify for RFL exemption, as the DVLA accept that the manufacturing industry traditionally closed down for business over Christmas periods, resuming the first week in any New year. Thereby confirming that it was impossible for any vehicle to be made between 24th December 1972 and 6th January 1973

they must have pulled thier fingers out over xmas or the numbers were not consecutive. ol yella was built on the 11/12/72 and is ld20746 and was registered on 31/12/72. on the BMIHT cert though it quotes chassis and body numbers. i am confused.

James Taylor lists LD21086 as the last eligible Stag, but the rest of the above is quoted direct from our SOC website.
