    Expansion hose

Just helping a friend today with a problem getting the expansion hose to fit and seal properly.

He bought a replacement hose from Rimmers, that would not fit onto the bottle.

I had always thought that the correct size was 8mm, but when I measured the expansion bottle is was 9mm!

So the puzzle is why is the radiator pipe 8mm and the expansion bottle 9mm? Does this require a special tapered hose or what?

Perhaps the bottle is a replacement with the "Wrong" hose fitting? I would some a 9 mm hose if it is available, and a jubilee clip will easily make it a tight fit at the radiator end.

I think the bottle is original, it has been there about 30 years or so. I dont think 9mm hose is a standard size. The Rimmers 8mm hose was massively thick so it wouldn't expand enough.

Would the size originally have been in Imperial dimensions? Say 3/8 inch. Regards, John.

Have you tried softening the end of the hose with boiling water?

So 5/16 is 7.93 (8mm) and 3/8 is 9.5mm. But hoses these days are made in metric so they will be 8mm or 10mm.

So using a 10mm hose should more or less fit the bottle, but would be a real sloppy fit on the rad tube. But anyway why didnt they make them both the same size?

I believe that an o ring was fitted to opening in cap to take up any slack around pipe. If not try fitting one
I am talking about the mk1 type of expansion bottle.

I have just been and checked the expansion outlet pipe on my Stag radiator and it is 8.3mm OD. The OD of the bottom stub on the expansion bottle I removed from the car in 2008 when I fitted a Volvo header tank is 8.3mm. The rubber hose still attached is marked Gates 8mm. Fits perfectly.

Thanks Dave, that's interesting. We have a rogue oversize bottle bottle that appears to be original but hopefully the BL ones are of the correct size.

Has Glenn been at my Gin?

half decent 8mm id hose should fit both ends, suggest that your friend gets in touch with RB to advise them of the issue with the part.
