Andy Morgan the chap who rebuilds ZF boxes for a living, he's refurbished 2 for me and I am well pleased with the results. Said this
"Fluid choice is up to your budget, you can use fluid that meets Dexron 2 or 3 standard, but if you want the best for it then a fully synthetic ATF is the way to go. Running temperatures are lower which is good, service life is therefore doubled or tripled depending on use and shifts are a lot smoother. I shall send a few links over for the synthetic options. You will need around 9 litres in total and just in case I forget to mention it you must add 1 litre directly into the converter before fitting (it will not come back out ) "
The litre in the TC is only required if it has been refurbished as its impossible to remove it normally.
I changed the oil after 100.000 km due to a recommendation of BMW for the ZF 4HP22. The drain volume was appr. 4 l of total 8.2 l oil filling. The rest remains in the torque converter which can't be drained. So the oil change is more or less a dilution.
I used Mobil ATF 220.in my gear box.
