    Hello from new owner

    Hi All,

For my sins I have plunged myself back into Stag ownership. Recently acquired a 1973 mk2 car in signal red with black interior. Originally manual o/d but converted to auto bw65 many years ago. Car was restored over 30 years ago and still seems to be in pretty good shape.

As an introduction I first owned a Stag 40 years ago and the car was my daily driver and took all of the little money I had and a lot of my time. I loved it, and it started my interest in classic cars. After 8 years on the road and another 12 years in storage I sold the Stag to a friend as family life took over.

As family grew on I thought of wanting a modern classic, a car I could just get in and drive. Not a car like my old unreliable Stag, not really unreliable but as you know you always have to be prepared with these cars. So I bought a Jaguar XKR, my dream car with the budget I had. What a fantastic bit of kit that was, so smooth and extremely fast.
Only problem was that there was nothing wrong with it. It had a full Jaguar service history which was important to be maintained for the value of the car. Because of this there was little hands on I could do. Perfect you would think, just get in, press button to drop the hood and drive.

After 5 years of car boredom and wanting a new retirement hobby I lusted after a Stag again. Not sure why, wife thought I was going mad selling the Jag.
Oil changes and rad flushes was the order of the day, so I have lurked on this forum for a few months, rejoining the SOC a couple of months ago. I sold the XKR to make room in the garage as my search for a Stag started.

Despite seeing some of the old issues of 40 years ago still being around today that didn’t put me off owning a Stag again.

Besides there is now this helpful forum, something that wasn't around during my previous Stag ownership. So I hope I can get the occasional help when I get stuck and hopefully I can reciprocate too !

I’m currently going through a full service of the car and to get its first MOT in 5 years. Nothing especially wrong with the car but was in desperate need of brake bleeding/fluid flush. Done this but think it might have a faulty servo. So currently exploring the problem with the excess effort needed to stop the car. Pads and shoes are new and no signs of ceased calipers or rear wheel cylinders.

I’m not sure when last coolant flush was done so I would really like to do this sooner rather than later. I've searched the forum but not found the answers I wanted so probably best I start a new thread about this.

I also need to retune the Stromberg's. As car is running very rich and has covered my garage wall and floor in soot. Initial inspection shows left carb set very rich and right carb very weak. Just waiting for a service kit to arrive before I strip these down. I’m following the very helpful Richardthestag videos on YouTube about doing this job. Very good they are too.

I’m intending to rebuild front and rear suspension as a winter project, so I am sure that will throw up some questions nearer the time regarding suppliers, poly bush or not etc etc.

So that's me busy with a car for a change. Hopefully nothing too serious or expensive, as you can never tell with secondhand cars, new or old.
Apologies for the long intro. Best wishes Alan

    Welcome back.
fwiw, standard stag brakes are really ok. They are from a well known light commercial vehicle.
If they are not working well , many owners choose to ‘upgrade’
Think it’s best to spend money & effort on the original system.
Limiting factor on stag braking is actually the tyres.

      Thank you for the welcome.
I agree. I have no desire to go with an upgrade option on the brakes as I don't think it necessary. if abs was an easy upgrade then maybe but I could stop my old stag on a sixpence back in the day.
I'm currently looking for new tyres to replace the 20 year old ones. Thinking Michelin Energy Saver +88H 185/70HR tyre. A little more expensive than some of the options seen on here recently but I really want a HR rated tyre.

Welcome. Glad you've got to re-enjoy your first love . I hope you have a load of fun

At 20 years old, I'd strongly recommend replacing with new if you value your life and your loved ones.

I've got Michelin Energy Saver 195/70/14 on mine for the past 7 years and they're grand in my book, though feel a bit wooly compared with the Goodrich 185/70/14 that were on when I bought the car. Will revert to 185's when I buy the next set. My Michelins are only rated for 118mph, though have notified my insurer and they're happy.

The originals on mine looked fine - plenty of tread, no cracking etc and drove fine in the dry. In the wet or even just damp, they were lethal. Tyre fitter reckoned they were ~35 years old. The general distilled wisdom is that sunlight causes cracking, whereas oxidation (ie time-related) causes hardening. Think about changing from 7-yrs on and definitely at 10-yrs.

          Thanks for the welcome StagJonno.

Definitely will be replacing the tyres, with quality ones as not worth scrimping on costs with something so vital. The mileage I’ll be doing means they will last me my target age of max of 8 years. That works out less than £45 per year.

So do you think the wooly feeling is due to the small extra width of the tyre or due to them being Michelin’s vs the Goodrich. The 185/70 Michelin’s I refer to are HR rated and are highly rated for the wet too. Though I doubt I will be taking the car out unless it’s forecasted to be a good weather day.

A charming story and lovely introduction! A welcome change to other first posts along the lines: "How do I open the bonnet if the cable has snapped?"

If you were driving a Stag 40 years ago, how did that arouse your intersts in classic cars? 40 years ago, the Stag was a "modern" !

My first Stag was a 72 m/od in damson, 10 years old. The newest Stags were only 5. But they were seen as a classic in the making and owners were beginning to take extra care with them even back then. At 10 these cars went very rusty just like most other cars on the road. But enthusiasts back then were spending vast sums in maintaining and even restoring their Stags. Ok some went to the scrappers, but many didn’t. These are the cars still here today. Remember the stag was designed in the 60’s.
I recall the the classic car magazines of the 80’s always featured stags, mg’s, e-types and other jags, even 1600e’s, etc. Never an escort, Capri, audi, Datsun even BMW’s were rarely featured. I even had classic car insurance by late 80’s on my stag.

Or perhaps it was just the stags unreliability or reputation that defined the stag as not ever being “modern”.

Oops, just realised this forum doesn’t like apostrophe s and some other syntax.

Think it's something to do with posters' operating systems - my guess is you're using an Apple device?

in actual fact, you might not be too far from the truth. In order to write German characters (,,,) and French accents, maybe I have "international fonts" which circumvent an issue with special characters!
