Gear Change Lever Adjustment.

Hi,
According to the ROM .....Gear Change Lever, Check-and Adjust section... 37.16.01.

It mentions having to position gear lever to First/second gate position, tighten right hand pin until it moves gear lever, slacken pin half a turn and tighten locknut, same procedure for reverse gear.

Question is ...if this procedure is not followed what would happen? Lets assume the pin was not touching the lever in first gear and was out about 1/4-1/2 inch
and the lock nut was tightened?

I think it’s just to ensure that the pins are fully into the slots but not causing any binding? The slots are there to prevent the lever from rotating.
