Anyone had this issue with CV Propshafts?

Please can you lovely experts tell me 3 things:

    1) is this too much play in my diff...?

    2) has anyone had a CV prop and was it straight forward to fit?

    3) does that prop wobble look like too much? Will it cause a problem?

    Thanks in advance people!!

IMHO, the "wobble" in the prop WILL cause vibrations.

Play is about the same as on my own diff.

I agree with Wilf. That will cause a serious vibration. The alignment needs to be absolutely perfect with something that will rotate as rapidly as the engine. I think I would ask the supplier for a replacement shaft.
The play/backlash is "Considerable" and could probably be eliminated if the diff was rebuilt. You could live with it, but it will "Clonk" a bit as you put the power on and off.

The one I had on for just over 12months was similar to that, poor inaccurately drilled flange holes.
When one of the rubber boots disintegrated, to get the shaft off I had to tap the bolts with a hammer to get them out.
It didn't wobble like yours though. In the end I went back to the orginal & put up with the play in the spline.

Threw the CV one away - IMO waste of money.

Backlash in diff will more than likely be worn planet gear shims.

Not being funny Chix but 45seconds into your video and it very much looks like your diff nose if going to break away

That would cause a vibration, followed by an involuntary emergency step and some serious camber issues on the back wheels

Good Grief! Well spotted (unless it's an optical illusion)

I bought a prop shaft from rimmers. I got around to fitting it 1 week before the 1 year warranty ran out. The gaiter was split. They sent me a new shaft to me here in US. it seems ok. but next project will use a regular one. that gaiter is not easy to replace

                1. The play in the diff looks fairly normal. It is the sun gear and planet gear thrust washers that tend to wear and allow play. Looks worse than it is when you grab the prop-shaft..

2, Mine was easy to fit, and the holes did align properly, not like yours.

                3. Mine does not wobble like yours and I would worry if it did. Having said that, it may be balanced out. If it hasn't been balanced, it will shake like hell at 60mph with that much eccentricity.

All in all, I would get it replaced. Hole alignment alone should be sufficient.

                Good luck.

Have you got the correct shouldered bolts for the flanges? Regular threaded all the way bolts may not align things as well as the shouldered ones..

Right, so this, what are you both saying? Something is cracked? Going to fall off? Where exactly am I looking?

The propshaft flange should have a concentric register…. The bolts shouldn’t & won’t do that function. The diff lash appears to be large, but should only cause a thunk on take up… not a vibration.

The extension can be gusseted to prevent fracture, but not essential. May become essential if the car is run with a propshaft out of balance!

Tend not to use rimmers unless they are the only source of spares.

The propshaft isnt seated properly in the diff flange. If you watch the video carefully you can see the gap between the two flanges on one side.

This might be the bolt holes being miss aligned, the two flanges should mate perfectly without the bolts being in place.

Not much play in that diff, most of it is in the splines. If its got the original 3.7 diff you are going to get 3.7 times more rotation on the propshaft flange than the output flanges, the rest will be worn thrust washers.

I wonder if it's that bloody CV wobbly propshaft that did this???
