Aside from the golf clubs I have a selection of bulbs, fuses and crimp connectors and a tool roll with basically a full set of tools including some araldite and epoxy putty. I like the tool roll as it’s compact you can jam it anywhere and it doesn’t rattle around. In 25 years of classic cars I have broken down twice, once a rotor arm cracked in half (araldite got me home ) and once a crank sensor bracket snapped(epoxy putty got me home) I still have a bit of room so a bottle of red and white sounds great!

In my 50 years of motoring I have once needed the spare. A bus I was crawling past which had stopped at a village bus stop decided to pull out and forced me to kerb the offside front tyre on the opposite kerb. Wrecked the tyre. Now I always use DRLs - they look naff, but tyres are expensive ( I know, I should've stopped in front of the bus and taken his details, but I didn't).

The insurers that advertise in the magazine (RH ? - I should know,I'm with them) include a breakdown service in the policy.

I have had a few strange ones.. remember those golf clubs? Yes a WOODEN tee right through the sidewall of the tyre! It must have fell and laid just right to pierce the tyre as I drove off.

On a similar note my wife’s car, a complete CO2 cylinder from a soda stream inside the tyre when they removed it… pretty sure some kid laid it up against the tyre so it pierced it as she drove off.. it was a run flat so I hope they were disappointed..

Not everyday contents I know, but I recently emptied pair of axle stands, support timbers, engine ancillaries, spare wheel, rusty petrol tank, out of the boot of my stored rolling shell in preparation to restart the restoration. Look what I found ! and the date... June 1994 !!

Maybe...Emergency light reading during those times whilst waiting for AA breakdown recovery.

I spent a few moments with my son reading the classifieds , crying at the prices.

I carry a spare fuel pump, spare leccy ignition, various cable ties and a Bikes inner tube. If you have a hose with a hole or any kind of fault so as to loose coolant, water , fuel or oil. Insert the inner tube into the hose then at each end fold the inner tube and fix on with the jubilee clips or cable ties. Fill up. This will take you home , then you can replace hose.
