Screw sizes - door card fittings

    Hi all,

Just getting all the bits and pieces on to my new door cards and find I'm missing the small screws which fix the puddle light lenses; also those which fix the chrome surrounds for the door handles - please see photo below, indicating locations of these. Can anybody advise what the thread sizes for these two are? Do both applications use a similar thread size? I think they were either missing, or had been replaced with self-tappers by a previous owner...

Thanks for any advice - Dave

They should be self tapped chrome screw. As a reference, the black plastic behind the handle on the seat handle should be the same screw.

The chrome surround uses a bolt not a self tapper. Screenshot 2022-05-16 at 10.21.22.png

        Jeff,

Those bolts hold the door handle mechanism to the door shell. The covers are secured by a chrome, countersunk self tapper - one for each cover. They do not appear to be in the parts manual.

          Thanks Dave,

Having only recently fitted them, I'm sure they are a bolt as they are very fiddly to get in whereas self tappers would have been easier. If you look at the other picture of said hole, it looks threaded.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. To my ageing eyes both of these holes do actually look to have a thread tapped in them, and since I posted this question I had a moment of inspiration and tried a screw from a domestic electrical fitting (as per heater valve) in the puddle light bracket and it appears to be a good fit(!?) These screws have a chrome pan-head, so I'm thinking why not? Haven't tried the screw in the door handle yet as it is currently too long. In any case, that application would need a csk head, so even if the thread was compatible this particular screw wouldn't be appropriate.

As dasadrews picture, thats what I used. I bought a box of various screws from Halfrauds, they were invaluable. When I first started I was wasting too much time and effort trying to source the right screws, bolts, washers e.t.c. Improvising gets results fast.

p.s, I dont know why but I cannot seem to get the chrome cover back on for the near side handle.

They're very fiddly, the door card holds it out so needs pressing in more, then the fiddly screw.

If memory is still serving me, the thread on electrical sockets etc is M3.5, though if your screw came from a very old fitting it could be different (possibly a BA size).

All, I think it's a No.6 UNC setscrew panhead, 1/2" long, Pozidrive. In the Standard-Triumph Hardware Catalogue it appears as item PX354. Peter at LD Part has it under the PX354 reference (Philips head rather than Pozidrive). Interesting that a M3.5 will fit, I haven't tried myself but seems very plausible. I guess that a self-tapper would serve the purpose, expecially if the cover has been taken off a few times already, but once someone has taken this option the original setscrew is unlikely to fit.p

(edit) forget to add that I couldn't see it in the parts book either

This is what I ended up with - the electrical fitting screw (cut down) in the puddle light, and a 6g x 1/2" s/s self-tapper with raised csk head in the door handle surround. They seem to do the job and look ok.

I have just been trying to tidy up all the little details around the car, and I noticed the screws on the front lenses needed attention. The one screw that did seem to fit had a thread diameter of 3.5mm. Having tried all screws in my "imperial" box to no avail, I did a bit of research on the net based on the assumption they were Unified threads, and came up with 6-32 which is a coarse thread approx 3.5mm, so having ordered some now I will soon know if they fit.

I wonder if the puddle lens screws are 6-32? Maybe I should also try the M3.5 screws as well?

Update: I just tried the M3.5 screws in the front lenses and they seem to fit just fine. Thanks for the tip guys!

PS: I have always found that the door lever escutcheon/cover fits with a csk self tapper.
