    Difficult bolt

Has anyone replaced the Solenoid on an 'A' type Overdrive? What is involved and how is the best way to do it?
There is one bolt , the top one which is difficult to get to, do you have to take down gearbox, or can the gearbox be lowered i.e, undo the exhaust centre bolts, undo the gearbox mounting and take off the centre bolts for the prop?

Your expertise would really be appreciated.

Replace gearbox with a zf4hp22 and enjoy driving. Why make life difficult pushing a clutch peddle
. (Make way for a up and coming new solution to ease your problem from a triumph stag specialist).

      What solution? Don't understand?
Anyway.......to convert from manual to Auto ZF is going to be near enough 5 grand . A lot of wonga for a gearbox! The Red Stag on Ebay that went for 14,000 had been rebuilt with a ZF, BMW rear, and loads more would have been a better deal ...........

So......anyone want to help please. Will probably take the more difficult route tomorrow, unless someone done it and can advise.....

Can I ask why you are thinking of replacing the solenoid? I thought that it was engaging OK.. Or has that changed?

Hi Terry, One of the wires connected to the switch on top of the gearbox near gearstick which goes to the Solenoid was slightly burned and frayed I noticed. Also the switch was moving about ....really loose. I changed the wire and tightened the switch but in the process the wire connected to the solenoid came off...well fall off really. It was always loose, just about hanging on.
So I need to replace the Solenoid, its really in a bad shape to be repaired.

OK just wondered.. so that loose wire/switch was probably your original issue then? I had an A type but it’s been years and it wasn’t on a Stag so can’t be if much help on your question.

The ROM tells you the best way.

Being very honest, I could not find 40.22.04 in the ROM. So I just got on with it and used my initiative and common sense.
Thanks for pointing the way anyway.
