Alternatives to a LHD Triumph Stag steering rack ??

I have a power steering problem here in Canada and have had it removed/ rebuilt/replaced and still not working, and yes the pump is working. I have heard 'rumours" that there are other racks that can be used ???? Any suggestions would be gratefully received as I am at wits end, and Rimmers do not have any LHD units available at present.

    Hello Robin,
Two folks from California sent their racks to M&P Steering in UK. Turn around time was a week or so. Triumph Stag Club USA has some. He is super expensive. but if he wasn't no one would send back their old one. A few years back someone wrote an article in the USA Stag mag. They modified a Mazda Miata rack to work on a Stag. It was expensive. I recall the vendor was in Canada.

      Hello Robin,
Contact John Gauldin, Triumph World Services in Edmond, Ok. You have to send both your pump and rack to him.

Did you ever remove that rack and check if the bobbin was installed the correct way around?

Chap in the UK has fitted a lhd vauxhall corsa steering rack to give him electric power steering. The position of the rack needs the lhd rack on a rhd car. So you could look into a rhd rack on your lhd car, if that's a route you want to take.

After having my PS Rack rebuilt X 2 with NO luck, a friend and I were pointed in the direction of Theo Ouborg in Holland ; Theo Ouborg <theo.ouborg@gmail.com> He purchased all the Triumph Parts when Rover pulled out of Europe. He has PSP rebuilding service, and uses a laser printer to copy parts and have them remade. We shipped two PSRs to Theo, from Canada and whilst not the quickest service, both were returned tested and in perfect working order.

                good to know,
Did he indicate what the problem with your rack was?

My Rack shaft ends required the use of his laser printer to have them restored to original shape, plus new seals and a rebuild of the Control Valve. I teamed up with a fellow Stag owner with PSR issues and packed them together when shipping from Canada to Holland, so shipping cost was only 1/2 that cost. Good news is that the rack went back on and works 100%, so no more Popeye muscles required to steer my Stag.

Recently have been given the name and site of Stag PSR builder, much closer to home [450 miles]; www.steerandgear.com : for those living on this side of the Atlantic, and they quote $500.00 US for a rebuild. My fellow Stag owner friend who I shared the Holland shipping costs with has two more PSRs requiring rebuilding, so he is going to give them a call, as their site gives their long history in the PSR fixing.

                    OK

Don’t understand where a laser printer comes into it but sounds good. Presumably your issue was in the control seals then.

Would that be a 3D printer? These are now being used to make replacement parts instead of stocking spare parts.

I'm the guilty one there, and it is a nice system, but a lot of work with associated switching / cowling works involved, I wouldn't go down that route again.
The conversion will make the car difficult / impossible to pass on so I'm looking to convert back to Stag rack, probably using a Volvo electric pump.

I was reading up on the US club mag about a conversion from a MX5.. it seemed pretty straightforward, but needs modified track rods, lower steering column end joint and a special bracket for mounting, otherwise it uses the original pump and steering column.
