    500 miles approaching

Having done nearly 300 miles of shortish journeys since my engine rebuild I’m now gearing up for my first ā€˜long’ trip. I’ve been asked to take my niece to the Prom - 60 miles there and 60 back, then potentially on another 90 miles if things, and the weather, are looking good. I’ll take plenty of spare fluids and a reflective jacket…

That will take me up to the 500 mile mark at which, I’m reliably informed, I should get someone to re torque the heads. Note, before anyone kindly suggest that it’s something I should do myself, I don’t have the time, the tools or the risk appetite to try!

Two questions for you knowledgeable folk:

    1. Is there anything else I should ask to be checked or changed while it’s there after its maiden 500 miles.

    2. It seems to run sweetly at the mo and sounds great, but it is a little thirsty and exhaust dust/fumes is significant on reviving. Should I be asking the garage (knowledgeable Stag folk) to check the timing, the ā€œset-upā€, the carbs… or just trust them to tweak what’s needed if it’s needed? Just not sure what to ask for.

    Ta

    Great news Nick

    who set the carbs up?
Paul - 3 projects, 1 breaker - garage built and housing 2 white Stags. One runs, one doesn't

They were apparently set up when the engine was refitted, but that was by the folks who shall never be named (nor revisited…) so I’m not confident it was done properly. I’m just also not sure what ā€˜properly’ means it sounds like. I’m just so grateful to have it running smoothly, well, running at all, that I haven’t thought too much about finessing it. My local garage, who’ve done the simple jobs, set it probably needed ā€˜a tune’. Would that be the same as setting up the carbs?

Oil and filter change essential after the first 500 miles. Regards, John.

Take the time to get a local Soc enthusiast to help do the retorque & mixture adjustment… or find a stag specialist via the local Soc recommendation.

Thanks. I have a couple of recommended specialists I’ll be trying; it’s what to ask then for I’m hoping to establish. Sounds like:
            Re torque heads
            Oil and filter change
            Check the mixture (?)
