If the engine sound has changed since your oil and filter change then indeed you probably should not drive it until you have found the issue. Does it have the standard paper element oil filter in a canister or a spin-on adaptor?
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

May be you could borrow an endoscope and have a look at the bottom sprockets and chain tensioners to see if they are right out or not as there has been some soft gears etc. As Wilf said would not go far without finding the problem as may cost your a lot more.

Always worth checking the viscous coupling, the noise from the bearings failing on these often sounds like its coming from deep inside the engine. Try rocking the fan and see if there is any movement in the bearings.

When I bought my red Stag it started making a similar noise. I had Chris Spain to fit new chains tensioners etc etc. What he found was the PO had ' fixed ' the tensioner in such a way by a bit of filing and what ever and elongated the tensioner where the bolt fits. To get a bit more life out of the chains instead of replacing them.
Chris said if I had left them they were in an imminent state to snap.
