    Steering rack tie rod

Hi Everyone, I’m trying to get hold of a steering rack tie rod as I had an MOT advisory on the offside. As you can’t get them new, Paddocks were the only supplier doing a reconditioned one but they are out of stock and when I asked them, they said that they are having difficulty in getting someone to recondition them. Are they easy to recondition myself? Or any other ideas? TIA.

Is it the rod end in the rack, or the rod end in the hub?
it’s adjustable with shims in the rack.
track rod end at the hub is replaceable with available new part.

Thanks for your response. It’s on the rack. It’s the actual tie rod not the end as per picture.

Lash there can be actual rack to bearing lash, or just the end socket needing re shimming.

Bend back the tabs and separate the two halves of the ball joint. You will find some shims between the two halves.
If you can get the appropriate size shims to take the play out of the joint its easy to do.
if you can't get the shims file a few thou off the end of the outer housing where it contacts the locking tab and it will have the same effect. I would recommend a new locking tab as the ears sometimes break off when you knock them over when you have the clearance correct

if on the drivers side, grap the tie rod and wobble it up and down. if there is movement, loosen the big lock nut and tighten the nut under it. if the play is left to right. u can do what Neil said. Someone does shims and cups.dont get another rack. get urs rebuilt.

I can't find it now, but an outfit in Australia has new custom made rods

Chris Witor sells the shims in different thicknesses. Look under Triumph 2000 & 2500 Steering. Easily done with the rack in situ; I had to do the passenger side of mine before the last MOT.
