Brakes, suspension and a stalling automatic

Hi all, car still not running properly.

Car will start but only with foot on accelerator, even once up to temp cannot remove for or car will die. Rev counter not working (needle jumps if you knock on it but that's it), cant check timing, fuel is definitely getting to the carbs, have tried adjusting idle screws to no success, engine noise does not seem to change. Any ideas anyone? Or anyone in the Derby area want to come and take a look for me and share some knowledge? Running out of idea but my gut says its fuel related.

Since its not running, im to do all brakes and suspension on stag over next couple of weekends, does anyone know if the spring compressor marketed to the herald/spitfire/vitesse/GT6 will work for the stag? I dont like the look of the modern ones and I cant seem to find the one that in the ROM specifically. If anyone can suggest an alternative or some that I can trust im all ears!

Also does anyone have any tips or recommendations that they have found from doing their own or things to look out for? TIA

I have both an auto and manual Stag. Getting the carbs right on an auto is, from my experience, is more critical than on a manual. What is the health of the carbs like? When where they last serviced?

not touting for business to all those "meerkat'ing"

could be anything or everything and definately need more information. setting the mixure via the ROM method works every time but if the carbs are tired or there is a vacuum leak then you will be chasing your arse trying to get them to work.

j posted up a few videos on my youtube channel to guide folk on strombergs

I had a similar problem when the car started easily but the engine would stop if I didn't keep the revs up which is tricky with an auto at a road junction. In the end, I cured the problem by fitting fuel hose clips to all the connection points rather than just the original push fits. Sounds too simple but it fixed the problem. It only takes a small air leak to cause an issue. The only other similar symptoms that I had were caused by the carb pistons sticking a bit and stopping the needle from dropping right down and causing the carbs to flood. Again all was ok until stopping at a junction or something. Lifting the dashpot pistons a wee bit would clear it but a bit of a pain until properly fixed. I would try the hose clip method first .
