    Really slack manual gear selector

Stag 1974, the gear selection is quite loose, especially 2nd to 3rd. It is very easy to move over towards reverse. I read in a previous post (2016) about securing and adjusting bolts and springs at the base of the gear lever. Is this accessible with the gearbox in situ? Thanks.

Yes it is you can remove the small shelf and cover that gear-lever passes through and you will then have access to the two screws that you can adjust play out. If you try removing the spring it is a bit of a job getting back in. Maybe it is missing?

Thanks. That sounds useful. I have heard that people give up on the spring! Others suggest grease or glue! I may well investigate, Stag new to me, expected a tighter gear change.

Mine is pretty good after I removed mine and readjusted the screws and yes some thick grease will assist but still a fiddle. It stopped annoying rattle and gear more precise. Remove that small front panel first and you will see screws holding the large one you can take the gear knob off and disconnect all multi pin switch’s so you have full access watch out for wiring to overdrive switch which tend to be brittle. If your taking it apart I would replace that wiring with new, they are available from usual traders!

Thanks. It’s probably something I wouldn’t actually do myself, but it’s nice to know it can be done. Will research local mechanics familiar with aged cars! Will check out parts on the web.

I fitted a new clutch a couple of years ago but the gearbox was sent to a specialist to have the selector rod seals replaced as I couldn't get the rods out. Since I refitted the gearbox, the gear change has been very sloppy. Especially second across to third/fourth and changing back down or even across to reverse. I tried adjusting the pins but then the gear change is either too hard and crunches or way to sloppy but not crunching. I have wondered if one (or more) of the detents weren't replaced correctly as I never feel any resistance.
i wondered maybe if your detents were stuck or missing.
            Any views welcome, thanks.

The detents (3 of them) are spring loaded, adjusted by a screw on each one.
Remote extension has to come off top adjust them, can be done with gearbox in situ,
if you remove exhausts & gearbox mount the rear of the gearbox can be lowered enough.
I did exactly that to change the rod seals.
