What is part no. 127380 used for

On page 04-16 of the parts book, is a switch, similar to the switch used for reverse. This switch is on the mechanism of the auto shifter. What does this switch do?
I was given a shifter, it came from a '72 Fed. Stag. it has this switch.

Could it be a seatbelt switch, I know federal manuals had them??

127380 is the overdrive isolator / reverse light switch but why it's on an automatic shift I couldn't speculate.

Its also the seatbelt switch on manual Federals after LD11277.. they have 3 of them..

Interestingly the switch on the BW35 is also listed as from LD11277 so that's definitely my guess..

Hi Terry, I have a Fed. '73 part cars. This is going to me my next and final project, that is after my kids get done with school and college. I'm assuming it goes on the manual gearbox's top cover. Would than make sense?

I think it goes on the side, opposite the reverse switch, the OD interlock is the only one on top.. look at the late TR6, I believe it’s the same. mine is an early box that only had a reverse switch, I added the OD on the top in the early TR6 position as it was easier than the proper Stag position. — I dumped the seatbelt circuit!

That is what the inhibitor switch in the auto gearbox is for.

The BW35 gearbox has the inhibitor switch and it the regular one for park and reverse. In the wiring loom there are additional wires in the short loom to this switch. As Terry mentions it's probably a seat belt feature. When I get time I will trace the wiring diagram. As mentioned, it came out of a '72 Fed. That year was a weird year for Stags, at least for Fed. cars.

A colleague of mine had a problem with his new Audi. Having stopped and got out of the car to open a gate into a private field, he returned to the car to find the hand brake wouldn't disengage (its all 'fly by wire'). He phoned the dealership to ask for assistance, and the mechanic said "has sir put his seat belt on?" (of course not, he's about to crawl up a farm track).

The point of this story - maybe the USA or other country had legislation requiring an interlock at which we can only guess?

No need to guess! The wiring diagram for all federals from around 72 shows seatbelt warning light circuit and this includes a switch in the gearbox.. USA TR6 had them as well. Seat belt warnings were federally required in 1972.
