Petrol Cap seal

I’ve often wondered about the whiff of petrol from my car (other threads are available) and started googling the petrol cap set up. It seems that some rubber parts (seals/bungs) are available but I can find pics of them fitted.
Here’s a pic of my petrol cap inners. Am I missing something? Thanks. Nick

Is the smell inside the car or outside? If inside, check over the hoses in the boot space (including under the floor boards). If outside, check the tank for holes.

Thanks, I’ll check the hoses and boot space anyway but there’s no sign of a leak (well, not a petrol leak at least!) so I think it’s just fumes. This cap arrangement doesn’t seem to create a deal, hence me wondering if something is missing. Ta.

Considering my Stag came with a recent MOT (which it now doesn't need), and no battery clamp - I would get a friendly testing station to give it a once over. At the very least it will give you a job list to keep you amused.

That rubber part never stays on. I'm always having to reinstall it anytime I open the gas cap. If this was a daily driver, it would be a much bigger deal, but it would be nice if it stayed on just once.

Fitted one recently. You need to trim it a little on the edge to stop it fouling the hinge or catch. Then it will stay on.

I can only assume, back then, they were probably made of better quality material. I changed mine back about 20 years back. No issue either.

Maybe. I haven't had to buy one for a very long time. If I needed one, I would go to SOC Spares or LD Parts.

A good tip is to lubricate the sealing face with petroleum jelly to stop it sticking to the inlet pipe.

I have synthetic grease pool lube for when I take apart my pool filter and clean it, so I typically use that on all rubber parts. Works great.

Mine also fouls the rod for the locking catch. I assume its because the rubber has gone hard with age. I have a replacement new one, but haven't fitted it yet - if I find that also fouls the rod and makes the cap difficult to open, I will try trimming it. But I'm hoping that fresh soft rubber will slide over the rod rather than resist opening.

Thanks all. I’ve bought one off an eBay seller with 100% feedback for a fiver. I’ll let you know if it’s a decent fit. Good tip about the lubrication too - hadn’t thought of that but in this heat it’ll be necessary.

I can confirm that I have an MOT, despite this being missing. Maybe it fell off in the six months since…
