Cylinder block coolant drain plugs.

It is a legacy from the two Dolomite engines welded together.
To drain the coolant properly and give the passages a good clean out. Should be drained and flushed every two years when the coolant is changed.
Early engines had drain taps fitted, but as these frequently became blocked, it is easier to remove them completely.

Removing the bottom hose will drain the radiator, and the engine down to the level of the top if the water pump. There will be no syphoning action to lower the coolant level any further.
Removing the temperature sender at the back of the l/h head will lower the level in both heads but not drain them. This is useful if you are removing the inlet manifold. Otherwise the only way you can drain each bank of the cylinder block is by removing both plugs.

I'm not sure what the weather is like in Germany, but here in the UK it is unseasonably hot. We are all looking for something to do in the cool of the house, and nattering on this forum serves that purpose. It also gives a chance to expand what we do (or do not) know about various topics.

It's 35°C in the shade in our little valley with a babbling brook, a bit hotter in the town. Had to limit the earthwork shovelling in the garden today to half a tonne. Just had a nice 5km walk to the DIY store and back. I guess it's down to what you're used to. Spent the latter part of working life commuting between Aix-en-Provence and Athens so a hot summer is quite nice.
Whilst the natterring is going on, when stowing the soft top should the front bar handles point outwards or inwards? The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137
