The whole lot pulls out of the housing, nothing really holding it in. To disassemble the roll pins need to be removed from the top and bottom, and then you can separate the pinion gear from the input shaft by opening up the round spring. then the bobbin comes off.. as Sujit says make sure you note how the bobbin is installed, they can be put together 180 degrees out. Also inspect all seal surfaces inside the housing and on input shaft as noted in previous posts.

The 77 ROM gives a good description but no servicing info on the control.

Check this blog for a few pictures,

These threads have a lot of info

Thank you both, when you say the whole lot pulls out of the housing, does it literally pull out or do I need to press it out?
the reason I ask is because i tapped it with a nylon mallet and it would not budge

The ROM says "carefully press or tap out the pinion shaft" I did 2 and certainly didn't use a press but cannot recall just how hard I had to "tap" it.. If I don't remember then I guess it offered little resistance. I think the only resistance is the bearing fit at the bottom.

Did the steel ring come out OK?

The bearing is stuck. Use a bigger mallet. Also there were two types of rings used. The earlier one can't be removed. the later type falls out. The earlier one is shaped different to accommodate a seal. That's the one in my video. The control valves are interchangeable.
