Clutch Problems

Hi,

I wonder if anybody else has suffered from this problem. The car was stored for the winter months, and driven only once ona six mile trip in Feb 2010, no problems.

I reinstated the car yesterday, Symptom:with the engine not running the pedal is smooth and free, as soon as it is started the pedal is stiff and notchy? The clutch disengaes no problem, there is no slippage or drag, but the operation when manouvering the car is erratic and jerky.Absolutely no issues with normal driving except the pedal 'Feel' remains contantly stiif/notchy. Stationary with the engine off it is fine?



I bought the car last year it was a complete nut and bolt resoration, Engine /Gearbox/Suspension/Axle overhaul, clutch assy was new, since the restoration it has covered 800 miles, all but 4 covered by me. With no problems at all?

Any ideas folks?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

The symptoms you describe of lumpy/notchy pedal when engine on and smooth when engine off usually indicate misalignment - the release bearing is not turning as it should as it is offset in relation to the rest of the clutch. It sounds like whoever did the resto work may have misaligned the gearbox on assembly - modern cars use self aligning clutch bearings andtherefore the gearbox alignmmnent is less crucial.

There are 2 special dowel bolts used to keep the gearbox aligned correctly to the adaptor plate - one each side of the bellhousing, and they are often not refitted.

The odds are the spigot bearing bush in the back of the crankshaft is now oval, and the clutch fingers and release bearing damaged, so it looks like a gearbox out job I'm afraid.

Thanks very much for your input, having read up about this issue last night I was fearing that this could be the conclusion, what puzzles me is that this condtion occured overnight literally? There was no gradual degradation, or misbehaviour, it is certainly puzzling to me.
