    Gear stick very hot.

    Good Evening All,

I am a newbie, so be gentle! Brought my 1st Stag 2 Wks ago. Noticed the gear stick get hot. There is warm air coming from the gear stick cover. Its is not tight and there is a gap. It’s just the warm air coming constantly through that’s worrying me is this common anyone have similar issues. It happens when the car has warmer up.
    Thanks guys

    Marc

Is the rubber gaiter below the cover intact.
The stick feeling hot is normal, warm air should not be coming past the rubber gaiter.

      Welcome to the forum.
How hot the gearstick gets depends how hard you’re driving and whether the silencers have heat shields, some do which considerably reduces the temperature.

Sounds like the rubber gaiter has gone as Neil has said. That sits under the wooden panel and it is responsible for stopping the hot air in the transmission tunnel being sucked up into the cabin. It is quite common for them to split. Mine certainly has!

Had to drive an auto without the selector surround & panel.
The extra noise and heat was quite astonishing.

Thanks Guys I will look at replacing the rubber gaiter. It has put my mind at rest that it’s a common issue. Was concern there my be a problem with the gear box of something. The Engine gets hot very quickly and then the hot air starts coming through.
            cheers Marc

Do yourself a favour and forget anything new in the rubber gaiter department, they just do not last. Mine has a piece of leather screwed in place and seems to be flexible enough to work.

Mind you not driven the poor thing in near 2 years and my aging memory may be fading.

"where the heck can I get a 4" square of leather?"

Simples, charity shop leather trousers for £20, cut the arse out of them and fix your car. Sell the remains of the leather trousers into the MGBGTLE community
