    Another newbie

Just joined the SOC after collecting (her) first Stag last week. I say 'her's' since it's my wife's really - significant birthday present - but, as I'm the oily fingered one It'll be me lurking here. I suspect the car was a previous SOC member's since it has the sticker in the windscreen. I'm a bit sensitive about cloning - an ebay seller 'steveofgloucester' whose car I just missed buying seems to have suffered this, so no reg number for now, but it's a red auto with black upholstery and has spent time in London, the Home Counties/Stevenage and the Welsh borders. Sold cheaply at Leominster last autumn, was bought and 'blown over' by a local chap and resold to me by the same auction.

Isle of Man resident, hence my forum name. The car seems excllent for the price, although needing considerable trim tidying/cleaning/replacement and with the expected trans/diff leaks. May require an engine out fix but I've good facilities and have several recent Benz classics fromt he 80s and 90s so ready to get stuck in.

Tried to post a pic, but the thing keeps going on about URLs. I just want to select and upload.

Not a complete Triumph virgin having had a TR6 and 2.5PI saloon, both on the 70s though, so a little while ago.......!!

Grateful for any tips from those who know what they're doing.

Got it in one Richard and thanks for your welcome. So much for anonymity!! Would be interesting to hear from any previous owner.

We looked at 7 cars whilst across seeing the family in June/July. None hit the spot in terms of both price and condition and we're happy to buy cheaper with some work required particularly if mainly mechanicals. At least then you know what's been done, whereas the old 'buy the best you can afford' approach to classics depends on the alleged meticulous servicing/refurbishment/rebuilding to have actually been done to the standard required. Sadly not always the case.......... An interesting time though viewing those 7 from which we learnt quite a lot. In fact the first we viewed in Somerset burst into flames during the test drive. We didn't buy that one.........

Nice top tint windscreen. If you need any parts try Tony White he’s on here under 25 years of hoarding.

Looks to be a good buy for that price.

Yes indeed Neil. Lots of so far minor issues, but as I said earlier, hopefully we haven't overpaid so there's a budget for fixes and we'll know what's been done. I would like to reinstate the seat occupancy/seat belt warning light circuit and the wiring is there but the belt buckles don't appear to be fitted with switches. If anyone has a source for these (hopefully just the buckle end) I'd appreciate a steer. Seems a waste to replace the whole things just for this. More as I progress.

Hi Malcolm. Your car does indeed look to be a solid base for titivation. As Mopo said, try Tony White (he advertises here in the "for sale" section" for the seat belt components.

Have fun. Any/Many other Stags on the IoM?

Evening Wilf. Will speak to Tony White as suggested. One other IoM Stag whose owner, Neville, I know as we're both members of the Manx Classic Car Club. We and 9 other cars (21 people IIRC) did a 10 day run around Pyreneean cols late May and Nev took the Stag. I took the 1995 SL320. No Stag at the time.......... I've also seen a dark blue one a couple of times but no opportunity to engage. Others may be hidden away. It's that sort of place.

Nice to see a Mk1 hood for a change - they seem few and far between.

Yes - would find the Mk2 rather claustrophobic and less safe than ideal I feel. Vybak repair to the rhs window imminent though.

However the car looks like a Mk2 (head rests, rear number plate lights). So the soft top might be newer than the car.

Ideed a Mk2. Late 1973 production. The hood is in good order except for the carelessly stored right window so clearly a replacement.

Looking at the Stag in the link posted by Richard, the Commission Number indicates a 4th Sanction car (Mk2) built late 1973. The Paint Code of 82 indicates it was originally Carmine Red so has had a colour change. The sale information states the hood was replaced around 98/99.

Looks a tidy car for the money. I just hope those shiny sill covers aren't hiding any horrors. The ones on my late '73 built car were

                            1974 Mk2, ZF Auto, 3.45 Diff, Datsun Driveshafts. Stag owner/maintainer since 1989.

The car has a long MOT, but that doesn't mean a lot. We have a once off Vehicle Examination here either on import or at 3 (or 4?) years old if bought new on island. Since there is no further test even of non historic cars provided they are kept taxed without a pause of over 2 years the exam is pretty stringent; more so than the UK MOT. Crossing my fingers although there is quite a waiting list for tests due to so many new/import registrations, so the car will continue in use whilst I sort all the niggles. Does seem solid and I been prodding everywhere underneath (have a lift, so easy access).
