    Brake squeal

Fitted new calipers, discs and Green stuff pads. A piercing squeal at low speeds that I’ve not had with 2 previous installions of Greenstuff pads on the Stag and Tr7v8 has led me to trying anti squeal shims.

I’ve used liberal amounts of copper slip as usual and tried numerous hard stops but the slow speed squeal comes back.

I’ve not stripped the pads out yet so don’t know the relative size of the shims to the pad backs.

The question is how to treat the 4 tabs - do you fold them up square or try to to lip them over the edge of the backing plate and should they be tight or loose? Or do they just push in and float on the unfolded tabs?

    Thanks in advance.

Mine squealed like a pig after fitting new calipers & green stuff pads.
I fitted anti squeal shims, the squeal reduced but didn't disappear straight away, took over 100 miles but now silent ever since (2000 miles).
As far as I can remember, folded the tabs over the pads.

My greenstuff pads still squeal when hot, all shims etc. fitted - I have stopped even noticing it now.
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

I am on my third set of Greenstuff pads with this Stag, and went through about the same number of sets on my previous Stag. No squealing. The only time, in recent years, I have had problems with squealing front pads was when I bought an unbranded set from a respected supplier. Could not stop the squeal so ditched them and went back to Greenstuff.

Make sure all surfaces are cleaned of old dust, then coat all surfaces (except the friction surface ) with copper grease.

I bought laser cut shims from Rimmer's, it stopped my Greenstuff pads from squealing.

Thanks for the thoughts, any advance on fold over the tabs?

The Stag specialist who fitted them queried why I was fitting new callipers rather than refurbished as the last set of new callipers he was asked to fit were eventually replaced by the old ones to cure the new squeal they introduced. I was sceptical but may be changing my mind. Is it possible the new “pattern” callipers may have a flaw? I did notice that the calliper’s didn’t centralise on the disc, the inner gap being much narrower but an old post mentioned the same thing so may just be a characteristic of the set up.
