Stag Lucas Distributor Fiddling after it gave up the ghost

The car starts runs then stops instantly and it may be heat related
I have replaced the Fuel pump...no difference
    I have replaced the coil
The car starts and runs, or it did, then suddenly completely stops on the hottest day after 1mile
I changed the fuel pump , cooler day it ran for 2 miles then died in exactly the same manner
I changed the coil (today) managed 3 miles cooler again, but this time dies just the same but nothing no restart after a 20 minute break, no spark
I took the top off the distributor and there was a very fine wire connected at the back near to the bulkhead side is this an earth? It looked very fine
I looked at the coil and though there is a sign that say 3ohm, on closer inspection it actually says point 3 ohm could this have damaged the Luminition?

    Would not have thought so.
what resistance coil are you using?
is your stag using a ballast system still?

Mk 2 stag with ballast resistor in the loom? white / pink wire from the loom to coil +ive

I have the t-shirt for this hateful design.

To confirm a fault with the supply rather than the coil or the distributor I ran a 12v feel from battery +ive to coil +ive......

well the engine fired straight up. I didn't run for long because 12v to a ballasted coil = overheated coil. But it confirmed root cause.

I bought a mk1 stag ballast resistor (back then it was cheaper than a 12v non ballast coil), took a feed from one of the white wires on the back of the fuse panel to the block ballast resistor, then ran a small jump wire from ballast resistor to coil +ive. there should also be a white / yellowish wire that is the 12v jump from the starter solenoid to coil +ive. Leave that fitted

Isolate the ******* offspring of Lucas white/pink wire and carry on

Fitted a new resisted wire. Been ok since …. Apart from a Bosch red top coil fail… lasted 3 or 4 years & then a duff viper coil … very annoying but saved the day because I’d bought 2 & the second one was ok.

Moral of that tale is new parts can be duff!

Personally l like to retain the ballasted system… it’s so quick to fire up the engine…..less than one crank rotation…or so it sounds.
