I was using a pint of oil every trip - the oil thermostat was leaking. I've taken the engine out today and everything from the oil cooler position backwards is liberaly covered in oil. At least there's no rust....

"or maybe towing the trailer tent helped this time?" ...but only if it's performance was increased also, you tease...lol.

Richard / Mole 42 :- We used to joke, back in the day, that a Rover 800 was £800 quids worth of oil-leaks

I must admit I'm not too impressed with the oil consumption, although the engine had still only done 4000km so maybe it's still running in?
Thanks Drew. That is just the information we needed.

So on my dispstick it is 17mm between marks, so around 25ml of oil equivalent to each mm on the dipstick. On my recent 1900 mile round-trip to the Lot, the level went down about 4mm, so that is about 100ml per 1900 miles. On the previous trip in 2019 and with a similar mileage, it used 4000 ml of oil (or 4 litres)! Only difference between the two trips is a baffle plate over the camshaft. Since my engine is 160K miles old with no re-bore, as Julian hinted, am I now replacing oil with petrol! Could the oil consumption be really that low? Is there a way to check for petrol in oil?
