    Overdrive Stag and other Triumphs

    Good morning all,
I have two used ODs, which would like to sell in Germany. Both serial numbers are: OD Laycock J-Type # 25/115842/xxxx. I reckon they were made for the Stag gearbox. What other Triumph cars will they fit, too? Would 300.00 pounds be a fair price - for both sides?
    Best wishes,
    Dieter - from Germany.

I have one from a Sprint. I just has to change the gear for the speedo. TR6 I'm assuming as well. Volvo used some variation of it. All valuable. If u have the shaft and adapter plate, it would be priceless.

What is the serial number of your OD? Same as mine?

To fit a J type to a Stag the gearbox has to have a J type main shaft and that shaft is special to the Stag gear box.

To recon one costs the proverbial arm and leg. If both are working O/D's then 300 quid is another proverbial " Cheap as Chips".

Dieter might not know about David Dickinson singapore stag

But yet sounds cheap, tricky bit is for the buyer to know that they are good 'uns

No, it’s the same mainshaft as the TR6 and probably others as well.. the major differences in the Stag box are the input shaft and the leyshaft..

last I looked the mainshaft and other parts were available, not cheap but available.

The Sprint uses that shaft. I picked up a Sprints box with OD for 150 quid. Fortunately for me , even though I stripped the OD, it had been rebuilt. Unlike the Stag gearbox and OD I picked up from a parts dealer years back for 400 quid. The OD needs at least 300 quid worth of parts. Some bearings went out in destroyed it. But the seller said it came out of a working Stag.

Typical of the Stag OD, Gearbox works sweet but not the OD, Mine gave so much trouble, I will stick to auto next time.

                      Good morning,
This is what Richard from ORS wrote to me:
"25/115842 is a J type Triumph Dolomite sprint overdrive unit and will only suit that vehicle due to the speedo and rear flange it is fitted with.
They would convert to a different vehicle but would require work."
                      Best wishes,
                      Dieter.

                        Hello Dieter,
Here is a side by side view of the speedo. Left is Stag, right is Sprint. This is easy to swap. I wasn't aware of the difference between flanges, but I used the Stags one as the Sprints one had a groove on it form the seal. The gear below the sprints drive is the same as the Stag. It sits in the OD. On the end of the OD is a number stamped on it. I recall Stag and Sprint use no. 6. This no. refers to that gear.

The stamp refers to the teeth on the drive (or “starts”) you probably want a ratio of 3:1. So a 6 would need a 18 tooth driven gear, a 5 would need a 15 tooth and so on.

Mine is a 7 (it’s from a TR6) but there is no 21 tooth gears, I used a 20 and given the tyre size I have it actually came out spot on and my Speedo is pretty accurate.
