    Chassis Number Stag 1974

My Stag went in for its test today 8Switzerland) and they could not find the Chassis number on the car.
I looked myself and could not find it also. I know there is a plate on the door panel but they say it must be located somewhere
    in the engine bay.

Can anyone confirm where this plate is located within the engine bay?

    TIA

Some export cars had it stamped on the front suspension turret I think I read somewhere, otherwise it won’t be on the car anywhere else except on the plate you mention.

So the chassis number should be on the door plate and the engine number on the rear of the engine if I understand correctly.

Cant check as the car is with the garage over the weekend

is this the first time you have tested this car on Switzerland?

Peter the Registrar in the club might be able to advise on physical chassis number stamping for export models in the 1970s.

From my experiences though, no domestic stag was stamped anywhere other than the pop rivetted plate on the LH door slam. Makes them nice and easy to steal and change identity I know. Nightmare

Other 1970s stuff that I work with is Range Rovers, they also had a stamped chassis plate pop rivetted - but to the bonnet slam panel. They also had the chassis number stamped into the front end of the RH chassis rail. I thought this was because of separate chassis. BUT many series landrovers of the time had no markings to the chassis at all, this went well into Series 3 Land Rover production.

No, it was registered over 20 years here as an old timer. Has beem three times for its old timer test and only this time have they asked this quesion.

This year I will loose my old timer registration which is a pain. They complained the quality of the car is below standard. There are some paint bubvles so it must have a respray and the hood has some scuff marks where it has rubbed against the frame. I keep the car in good condition but not showroom conditiin which is what they want. So a bit of a shame it will now have to go and be checked eveey 2 years.

Thx for the info on the numbers

            Feel your pain.
            Numpty Inspektors!
my advice is to get refinishing done to the areas that they were ‘upset’ by.
Then clean up a strut top.
Then stamp the strut top with the L.D. Number.
            Refinish if necessary.

Then re present the car for its inspection… maybe at another location?

I had similar trouble years ago in the U.K.
The car was a very smart Rover P5b.

The paper work vehicle identification ended with a G; but the chassis tag ended with a C.

The inspectors would not proceed with the inspection.

The discrepancy had been there since 1969.

We overcame the issue with a sympathetic inspector.

Afterwards we tried to get the authorities to correct the papers to match the car, but it was impossible….even after a
            few
attempts. ( apologies for the rubbish spacing & auto correct!!!)

In the end we recreated a vehicle identification plate to match the paperwork! Ending with a G instead of a C…. But kept the original & all the stupid correspondence that came from the utterly incompetent u.k. government vehicle record keepers.

My failed Australian export car did indeed have it stamped on the driver's side turret, where the red arrow is in this picture (not my car). However, it was only revealed when wire-wheeling off the paint.

A Lot of stag engine numbers have an extra zero added to the start on the V5 which is not part of the engine number stamped on the block or recorded on the heritage certificate

The historic vehicle association ran an article saying that up to 40% of the records at vosa/ dvla contained errors.

My sister diligently changed her drivers license address, when she moved. They returned it to the new home owners at her previous address. You couldn’t make it up!

I was told the reason the plate was on door shut was because there was not enough room under the bonnet. Typical triumph experimental staff joke.

Steve, on my Swiss stag the numbers are stamped on top of the suspension turret in the engine bay. The car is in the UK and l'm in Florida at the moment so cant take a picture.

WAIT. Found 1 on my computer......... Its on the right turret under the white remains of a sticky pad.

As MandM said my Stag has a 4 digit VIN but the V5 has turned this into a 5 digit by confusing the overdrive O for a 0.
No idea how long this has been confused for.

I had that problem with my TR5 (sold to buy the Stag), Letter to DVLA explaining the error with a copy of the Heritage Certificate and they change the V5.
