The split in the dash could be fixed with a bit of cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Just apply the glue and push the 2 sides together.
works v well
Tim
I wouldnt be very happy if a minor (coal-miner or youngster depending on the use of the word) spat on my dashboard. I would be like " no dont spit on the dash, open the window like a normal person"
Hello all, sorry I couldn't post pictures as the car is elsewhere just now but Mike's pictures in post 13 show the issue. I was flying a kite, somewhat, to see what experience was out there, I appreciate all the replies. Looks like its a common problem - not really surprising after all this time given the way the materials degrade. The vinyl is certainly very brittle. Thanks all.

Disgusting habit; encouraged by millionaire footballers, kicking a ball around a lawn, and over-acting when they fall over
My dash was totally stuffed - it had been badly re-covered previously, and on stripping this off I found numerous poor attempts at filling cracks etc. So I bit the bullet and had it renovated by a specialist firm who, after rebuilding the padding, used vacuum-forming to apply the new cover; the result was like new (should be, given what it cost ). Conversely, my console was in good nick, having no cracks or other damage; however its appearance was quite shiny compared to the dash. I was keen to avoid a further expensive re-covering job so had a go at completely repainting it with a matt black aerosol - quick and easy job and it ended up a pretty good match.

Can you tell us which matt black paint you used? I think that is what I need to go over the filler. Also, as a matter of interest, who renovated the dash? It sounds like they did a good job.
Mike, the guys who did the dashboard probably not much use to you as they are here in NZ . I expect there would be people offering similar in the UK? It would be interesting to compare the costs.
As for the paint I used on the console, it was Plastikote Matt Super, which I understand is available in the UK. I sprayed a trial area on one side, near the back, figuring that if it turned out crap I could just wipe it off with thinners, but it looked OK so I did the whole thing.

Thanks for the info. Who knows, shipping to NZ might work for some!
I have used this company to repair a number of splits in my dash but they did an excellent job. Not that local to Essex unfortunatly, but they may know someone more local
