I'll give it a proper run tomorrow and calibrate it against the gps instead of the speedo and report what I get.

As the SU fuel pump makes the flow/pressure fluctuate the readings wander a bit so they are going to have to be averaged by me.

I need some form of accumulator with a pressure diaphragm or a turbine pump ideally to take the pulses out of the supply.
Cheers Russ, will look forward to seeing results

The thing I like is at the end of every journey, when you switch off, it displays the amount of fuel you have used to the nearest tenth of a gallon during the trip, so if you reset the trip meter, you can get a fair average consumption figure for individual journeys - pretty useful.....

And it's a perfect period accessory.........

Wow that brings back memories...my dad bought one new and I can remember it been fitted to his then new late seventies Rover SD1...I must have been not much older than 10! Paddle wheel jobbie in an in-line filter type canister if I am not mistaken!

oh and a magnet to attach to the speedo or something??

          Happy Birthday Russ,

Think the trip comp looks great there,But I would like to know what sort of figures you can get with a well set up engine, would you ppost up the figures please?

          Regards Mark
OK Mark - you asked for it.......

Standard engine, cast manifolds, Strombergs, ZF 4 speed.
          Around town in D, 17 to 24mpg
          kickdown 10.4 mpg - ouch
          Constant 75mph, D, light throttle M25 and M23 - 27.9 - 31.3mpg

Journey was mainly fast A road and Motorway with about 1 miles of B road. I noted the mileage on leaving and then checked the recorded fuel used on the trip computer on our return. The average consumption calculated from these 2 slightly inaccurate recording devices was 26mpg - this sort of confirms the readings from instantaneous consumption are in the right area.

It was interesting to note, when doing 75mph, that I could continue to back the throttle off without losing speed, taking the fuel used from 19 to 27.9mpg. On that basis, it isn't just a novelty, it could save considerable cash over the year by giving you a reminder to back off.

              Russ Hi,

Trust you had a pleasant birthday.

Thank you for posting up the figures.............you know what ,I dont think they are that scary.

I have calculated that I am getting about 22mpg around town/short journeys, thats with occasional flooring of the throttle for fun.

But now Ive seen your kickdown figure ,ie 10mpg,that is scary,so I will do doing less of that !

Having said that the constant 75 mph figure I think is impressive. 27-31 mpg ,I think is well acceptable for a 3L v8,certainly returning more than my daily driver 5 series BM.That manages only about 17-19 mpg around town

Yipee more reasons to take the old girl out, economy reasons now !.

Thanks again Russ,I think thats made an interesting little post.

I find when driving a modern with a trip computer, leave it displaying average MPG to save money and slow down. But leave it displaying average speed tends to have the opposite effect.

Exactly - and leaving it on instantaneous mpg can be quite frightening :shock:

Frightens the bejeezus out of me - I just take heart when I see the end "fuel used" reading and think that's not too bad

Just seen the post in the mag.

I bought one of these off ebay couple of years ago, brand new but didn't work, great fun repairing the electronics, however I digress....when it worked the fluctuations were impossible to read. I managed to contact someone who used to work for Mobolec andhe reckoned the later units were much better at averaging the fuel pump fluctuations - any idea which type you have? Anyway now I have the flow meter, the next project is to to make my own circuit - after the ZF box/new engine fit/tubular manifolds - all sitting on the floor.....
