    Wiper delay

I know this has been asked before, but cannot find an answer searching on the forum. Has anyone found a solution for the non availability of the lucas wiper delay unit?

Spent the weekend sorting the wipers. Only had slow speed and no parking. Park switch on the wiper motor was OK. Turns out two pins on the wiper switch plug were swapped. Changed them back and have two speed wipers that self park, hurray. Only thing not working is the delay position which runs continuously. Took the cover of the delay unit and it is too far gone to mend.

I got a good one from Tony White. Maybe try Tony?

Yes that is a good call, I am building a small list of harder to get parts that I will ask Tony about.

In the case of the wiper delay I have seen a number of posts suggesting that alternatives were being looked at, perhaps including a variable delay control. However those posts did not, as far as I could see, reach a result/conclusion. Just wondering if anyone had any update.

I built my own variable delay unit well over 10 years ago now. Infinitely variable between 2 & 20 seconds.
Sits where the orginal unit was on the relay board. Utilises the orginal wiper stalk delay position and original wiring with an additional earth to the electronics.
Delay adjustment is a potentiometer mounted on the parcel shelf side.

With 10 years of living with it, very very rarely change the delay from approx 5 secs, so doesn't really need to be variable.
Being a retired electronics engineer, it was pretty easy

Before anybody asks, sorry, I'm not building another one. Although I still have the code for the microchip.

When I built a couple of kit cars the ford Sierra wiper delay relay was a popular choice, but may be almost as hard to find now

I tried to create something similar for my Herald, there is a Ford Fiesta delay unit out there that is supposed to work well, but it never came to anything.
Too many relays etc, too many odd logic decisions to make.

I bought a variable speed wiper kit from Retronics Ltd not long ago. The control knob my Dash Light Dimmer knob, which is not used as I have LED bulbs.

It is a stand alone system, separate from wiper system, which gives you 7 delays. Works very well. Not cheap though.

Hi Dave ... I've had and having a hell of a problem with my wipers. I've ended up buying a new stalk switch and a reconditioned wiper motor but no luck. Problem is similar to your original with delay and normal speed working but no auto park. No fast speed. Can you let me know what wires you had which were crossed and you corrected? Cheers

Same here, new stalk (rimmers) new park switch (nos) another (good?) delay unit…. Even made a new 3D printed park switch. Tried a nos motor too.

Hardly ever used if it’s going to rain…. But can be caught out.

Only works on 1 or 2 speed without correct parking or intermittent.

Another ‘good’ motor is on its way….

It’s been the longest job to properly fix so far.

Afaict the circuit for stag wipers isn’t at all simple.

But I only have fundamental electrical knowledge / skills.

Was trying to contact ‘Steve Hunt’ about help / advice….

Anyone got a way to speak / get help from him?

Recall his midlands location as being Hollywood .

Hi totally understand the frustration with this. Same for me as to the length of time I've spent on trying to resolve. It's been the most costly singular electrical item I've had to deal with. At least now, with the assumption that both the new switch and the new reconditioned motor in place it has to be with the wiring between. I thought I had already checked all that but will try again. I'll let you know if any success.

Talk about not seeing the wood for the trees. Finally discovered the issue which was incorrect wiring on the dash switch plug. The blue/light green and brown/light green wires were in the wrong position on the dash switch plug. They have to align colour for colour with the female plug. Once switched both speeds and auto park works. Intermittent isn't doing its intermittent thing and behaving light normal speed but that's for another day. Apparently the crossed wiring is common with new dash switches.

Hi Costell, sorry only just seen your post but looks like you already sorted the switched wires in the connector block of the new switch. I did get a new old wiper delay relay but that did not work properly either. I guess they are all past their sell by date now. Will just manage without the delay option. I Try not to go out in the rain anyway. Cheers
