Loose Steering Rack and hole in manifold.

My steering rack came loose today!! No-one to blame but me, as I fitted it, but all 4 bolts found to be hand tight and the nylock on the Steering column to rack coupling at the end of it's travel, I didn't think the wife had it in her!!!!! The rack was moving 10mm sideways before the wheels turned. If I had had 10 pints I would probably have been able to drive perfectly.

I am sure all of these were done up tight. Could they loosen with vibration?

I hope to get the manifold hold welded up. It is stainless, will I have a problem?

    Cheers

Did you torque them up and use new spring washers? I have never known the bolts to come loose.

As for the stainless manifold, the hardest part will be removing and replacing it.

Don't I know it. But I recently removed it when I fitted the rebuilt rack, so this time I will check all bolts and use stud lock.

Had the same thing on my rack bolts in the summer at one of the national, change the spring washers under the bolts , or it may happen again.

The manifold could be repaired on the car if you can get to it, mig or tig would be ok or a jubilee clip as a temporary patch

It makes me wonder how there is a hole in the s/s manifold!!! S/S is pretty tough, but could it be a stress crack?

wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a stress crack as Wheelz suggested. Yet another "improvement"

Cheapo nasty spring washers made from cheese are no good. Buy proper stuff and not from auction sites - unless of course it is a reputable trader

                My Bad.

Your spot on Chris, no hole in manifold, it was a shallow dent that looked like a hole , but as Dave said a pain to get off. Putting it back will be even worse.

My bolts on the rack did not have spring washers!!

                They will now.

                Thanks for the help gents.
